From the Directors of the Award-Winning Documentary Microbirth At least two amazing events happen during childbirth. There’s the obvious main event, which is the emergence of a new human into the world. But there’s another event taking place simultaneously, a crucial event that is not visible to the naked eye, an event that could determine the lifelong health of the baby. This is the seeding of the baby’s microbiome, the community of “good” bacteria that we carry with us throughout our lives. The seeding of the microbiome, along with breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact, kick-starts the baby’s immune system and helps protect the infant from disease across a lifetime. Researchers are discovering, however, that interventions such as the use of synthetic oxytocin, antibiotics, C-sections, and formula feeding interfere with, or bypass completely, the microbial transfer from mother to baby. These bacteria are vital for human health, and science has linked an imbalance in the human microbiome with multiple chronic diseases. Drawing on the extensive research they carried out for their documentary film Microbirth, authors Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford reveal a fascinating new view of birth and how microscopic happenings can have lifelong consequences, for ourselves, our children—and our species as a whole.

For most couples, conception and a healthy pregnancy often take planning, timing, and a lot of patience, even for the most fertile. Throw in some pre-existing health conditions, a few genetic hurdles passed on from parents and grandparents, and you may find you are one of the approximately 7.5 million women in the U.S. dealing with infertility. In Baby Maker, Barbara Rodgers shares science-based research and facts that clearly describe the critical role nutrition can play on fertility, the growth of a fetus, and even genetic synthesis in a newborn baby. Baby Maker offers comprehensive options and a step-by-step plan for improving fertility (for men and women), strengthening the ability of a pregnant mom to carry to term, as well as a plan to support a mother’s health during pregnancy. Finally, there is basic information offered on how to jumpstart mom’s nutritional health immediately following delivery. This book offers hope to the millions of women who struggle with fertility. Barbara knows all-too-well the positive effect nutrition and lifestyle changes can make on the human body, as she did after dealing with the challenging, debilitating symptoms of MS for several years and eventually healing from them. The author of Gutbliss and one of today’s preeminent gastroenterologists distills the latest research on the microbiome into a practical program for boosting overall health. Michael Pollan’s widely discussed New York Times article, “Some of My Best Friends Are Germs,” was just the tip of the iceberg. The microbiome—the collective name for the trillions of bacteria that live in our gut—is today’s hottest medical news topic. Synthesizing the latest findings, Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains how the standard Western diet and lifestyle are starving our microbiome, depleting the “good bugs” that keep us healthy and encouraging overgrowth of exactly the wrong type of bacteria. The resulting imbalance makes us more prone to disease and obesity and negatively affects our metabolism, our hormones, our cravings, our immunity, and even our genes. But beyond the science, what sets this book apart is Dr. Chutkan’s powerful three-level program for optimizing your gut bacteria for good health. Dr. Chutkan shares: Why hand-sanitizing gels and antibiotics are stripping our bodies of their natural protective systems Essential prebiotics and probiotics Recipes with ingredients that replenish the microbiome for each rehab level Cutting-edge research on the connection between the microbiome and the brain An intro to the stool transplant, the superfix for a severely troubled microbiome Dr. Chutkan is one of the most recognizable gastroenterologists working in America today, and this is the first book to distill the research into a practical, effective plan for replenishing our microbiomes. The Microbiome Solution will bring welcome relief to the millions who want to grow a good “gut garden”—and enjoy healthier, happier lives.

A practical, easy guide for expecting parents, Grow Healthy Babies provides clear and simple steps for a healthy pregnancy and preventing chronic diseases including asthma, eczema, and allergies. Written by lifelong allergy sufferers who wanted their own children to grow up healthy, this is the comprehensive guidebook every parent needs. As parents, we wish for our children to live happy, healthy lives - but we are facing an epidemic of chronic diseases. Half of all babies born today will develop allergies, and up to a third will become asthmatic or suffer from eczema. You don't have to accept these odds. Through simple and natural food & lifestyle choices during and after pregnancy, you can lower your baby's risk of developing a chronic illness by up to 90 percent. Referencing over 660 scientific studies, Grow Healthy Babies shows you how. You'll discover: - How friendly bacteria, your microbiome, shape both your and your baby's immune system - Which foods, supplements, birth choices, and feeding practices make a real difference to your baby's health - Why environmental factors and certain household products can trigger chronic disease, and how to choose healthier alternatives This book shows you how to let your and your baby's health flourish, thus increasing your baby's chances of growing up happy, strong, and free from the burden of chronic disease. Praise for Grow Healthy Babies: "This is an impressive book. With the depth and quality of information, logical flow, consistency and balance, this is something that everyone planning a family urgently needs to read. It goes straight to the top of my recommended book list for our students!" - Richard Burton, Founder and Director, Irish Institute of Nutrition & Health "Grow Healthy Babies is a great starting point for those who want to understand how to avoid one of the most mysterious and troublesome trends in modern life: kids that are, with each new generation, more and more allergic—and more vulnerable to inflammatory conditions in general. Many of the recommendations it contains have achieved something like “common sense” status among microbiologists (...) This book is a good evidence-based guide to get parents thinking about how to better play the odds of their children developing allergic and other chronic diseases." - Moises Velasquez-Manoff, Author of An Epidemic of Absence: A New Way of Understanding Allergies And Autoimmune Diseases "This book is a brilliant feat. Michelle and Victor take a huge amount of research and sift through it in a logical way, with a structure that flows clearly. Here's to growing healthy babies and children!" - Simone Davies, Bestselling Author of The Montessori Toddler "A fantastic accomplishment. It is easy to read, incredibly well researched and has enough history, personal touches, and detail to make it an exciting read, not just a simple guideline for new parents. As a physician, I understand the difficulty of explaining very complex issues in a way that can be understood by new parents seeking out the best information to raise healthy children. And as a parent I know how important this information is. This is a truly excellent book and I will definitely be getting copies for all my friends planning to have children." - Dr Lowan Stewart MD, former Clinical Assistant Professor, Oregon Health & Science University; Emergency Physician & Medical Researcher; CSV Regional Medical Center, Santa Fe

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn provides the information and guidance you need to make informed decisions about having a safe and satisfying pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period--decisions that reflect your preferences, priorities, and values. Unlike pregnancy guides that can overwhelm and alarm by telling you up front all the things that can possibly go wrong, this book first describes normal, healthy processes, their typical variations, and the usual care practices for monitoring them. Only then does it cover possible complications and the care practices and procedures for resolving them. Throughout, the presentation is crystal-clear, the tone is reassuring, and the voice is empowering. And the language is inclusive, reflecting today's various family configurations such as single-parent families, blended families formed by second marriages, families with gay and lesbian parents, and families formed by open adoption or surrogacy. From sensible nutrition advice to realistic birth plans, from birth doulas when desired to cesareans when needed, from reducing stress during pregnancy to caring for yourself as well as your baby after birth, this pregnancy guide speaks to today's parents-to-be like no other.
