Based on a highly interdisciplinary theoretical framework, Tobias Schroedler provides a comprehensive picture of the value of language skills within the Irish economy. The author manages to present and merge theories from economics, business studies, sociology, and applied linguistics making this an innovative and valuable contribution to the growing field of research on the value of multilingualism and languages. The first of two datasets presented in the book provides a macroeconomic quantification on the economic performance of four different global language communities. The second dataset consists of an expert interview study on the matter. Based on the data analysis, the author derives recommendations for economically beneficial language education policy making.

Australia has a reputation for sustained work in language policy and has had over 20 years of experience of language policy development. During these years, language policies have sought to increase and reshape languages education in Australian schools, but have had only limited success in achieving their objectives. This means that Australia’s extensive work in language policy has not yet guaranteed a secure place for languages within education. After a period of comparative neglect of languages and multiculturalism, Australia is now entering a new phase of activity in language policy and it is timely to consider critically what has and has not been achieved to date and the reasons why. The aim of this book is to examine the current state, nature, role and purposes of languages in Australian education as a basis for considering a viable, encompassing language education policy. The book is divided into four specific focus areas for discussion, each of which is based on a core theme in Australian languages education: engaging with diversity; the current state of policy and participation in languages education and languages teacher education; current orientations to languages education, and future possibilities and directions in languages education. Underlying the discussion is the recognition that at this particular juncture in languages education policy in Australia it is necessary to re-examine constructs, research, evidence and practice as the basis for renewal. The book presents a collection of papers dealing with each of the themes and aims to give greater focus to the contemporary debates around languages in education in Australia and more generally.

This is a fac simile edition of Bloomfield's An Introduction to the Study of Language (New York 1914), with an introductory article by Joseph S. Kess. Leonard Bloomfield (1887-1949) was responsible for two classic textbooks in the field of linguistics. The earlier, reproduced here, shows some striking differences to his later views, reflecting much of the then-current thinking on language matters. As such, it represents not only an interesting commentary on the theoretical development of an extremely influential linguist, but more importantly, it is a telling document in the evolving history of the discipline and a rich source for the (psycho)linguist interested in how and why we got from where we were to where we are.

This textbook is designed to serve as an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of psycholinguistics. It is directed at filling the reading needs of courses in departments of linguistics and of psychology, presenting an integrated overview of the ways in which both disciplines have investigated the learning, production, comprehension, storage and recall of natural languages. Also detailed are those research topics that have captured the interests of psycholinguists over the past few decades. Some current topics included are modularity vs interactionism, the role of parsing strategies in sentence comprehension, and accessing the mental lexicon in word recognition. Earlier topics that have attracted considerable energy not so long ago, such as sound symbolism and linguistic relativity, are also investigated in some detail. Psycholinguistics is an enquiry into the psychology of language, but the facts of language are what generate theories about why language is learned, produced and processed the way it is. Thus there is a wide array of examples from the languages of the world, intended to provide a feeling for what the nature and range of human language are like.

Situated at the interface between study abroad and second language acquisition research, this book adopts a threefold thematic focus to study abroad and the language learner, investigating learner beliefs about study abroad, learner experiences of study abroad in relation to a range of individual, cultural and social factors, and the nature of learner development while abroad at an intercultural, personal and linguistic level. Chapters present studies of learners in different geographical contexts, with different first and second language combinations. The studies draw on different methodologies, incorporating quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method approaches. Presenting findings with implications for learner preparation, expectations and support during study abroad, and highlighting developmental issues within second language acquisition, Study Abroad and the Second Language Learner will be of interest to all study abroad and second language acquisition researchers, as well as programme organisers, language instructors and other stake holders.

Want to learn the quickest, easiest and most efficient way to learn a language to fluency? Don't waste any more time and money with classes, textbooks, audio courses, computer programs and other materials until you have read this. Coming from 10 years of experience and having already shown thousands of language learners the right way to learn languages... Read on to learn the secrets they don't give you in class. Life is good for me. I am fluent in several languages and conversational in many more. I have friends I speak to on a daily basis who don't speak a word of English. My language ability has opened career doors and made immediate friends out of strangers. Better yet, I receive enjoyment out of using my languages daily in meeting people, watching movies and reading my favorite books. How was I able to learn a foreign language so fluently in such a short period of time? Let me give you a hint: it's not because I'm a genius, spend 10 hours a day studying or have some "gift" for learning languages. It's because I developed a METHOD that will allow you to IMMEDIATELY: Learn new words and phrases quicker than you ever have before and not worry about forgetting them! Speak without a single error. Natives will be scratching their heads wondering why you speak so much better than the other foreigners. Be able to "study" the language without getting bored ever! No more painful language learning. Become fluent quicker than anyone you know. I'm sure you know of people who have studied a language for a couple or more years. Now you can be fluent well within that time. Surprisingly, the best, easiest and quickest way to learn a language is not written in those textbooks, audio programs, computer programs or other materials. In fact, most of the time, they advocate a painful, hard way to get to fluency. What I've learned in the past 10 years is, it doesn't have to be painful or long! This isn't to say those materials are completely useless but if you want to gain from them as quickly and efficiently as possible, you need to incorporate them into a larger plan. I wrote this book to stop others from making the same mistakes I did when I started to learn languages. I wrote it to show the fastest, quickest and most efficient way to learn languages so that you don't waste a single minute or dollar. I've read a lot of material about language learning and used a lot of different methods. I've discovered what works and what doesn't. Everything I've written in my book is the tips, secrets and method that I've found to actually work to get me to fluency in the shortest period of time. You won't find any ridiculous ideas here like subliminal learning while you sleep. Everything here has been tested by me from scratch and is from real world experience.I have personally invested 10 years and thousands of dollars on learning the best, most efficient way to learn languages. I wish that I could have been able to buy the knowledge and information presented in this book when I first started out. It could have saved me a lot of trouble, time and money. Many people waste thousands of dollars or more on audio programs, textbooks, classes and other language learning materials. What if this book saved you from wasting money on even one of those? If this book saved you even just one hundred hours of studying, what would that be worth to you? Probably a lot more than the cost of this book. A lot of people start out learning a language and then give up somewhere in the middle, never reaching fluency and wasting all the energy, time and money they spent getting somewhere in the middle. Make sure you are not one of those people and invest today to discover what really works and how you can get to fluency quickly and efficiently.

Verbal performances are often encountered in the media where they are used to embody characters or social archetypes. Performed voices define the norm as well as the linguistic Others and by doing so circulate associated values and linguistic ideologies. This book explores the idea that, far from simply being exercises in verbal skill and flair, performances of social, ethnic or gendered voices in the media not only have the power to accomplish ideological work, they are also sites of linguistic tension and negotiation. Critically examining performances of French voices in the media, this book raises the following questions: - How are repertoires of voices constructed and subsequently perpetuated in the media? - How do the stereotypic personae these voices contribute to build become familiar to national as well as transnational audiences? - How do such performed voices reproduce hegemonic ideologies of standard and non-standard languages and participate in the perpetuation of social discriminations? - How are these performed voices commodified into cultural products of otherness that may later be reclaimed by stigmatized communities? Following an innovative framework which allows for analysis of performances of varied voices and their impact in the media sphere, Voices in the Media offers a new approach to the linguistics of media performance.
