A comprehensive collection of Virginia Satir’s research and teachings around the nature of humanity, author Barbara Jo Brothers has written the first ever tribute to the Mother of Family Therapy’s life-work, capturing the essence of Satir’s groundbreaking philosophies about the human race and the impact human’s have on the Earth. In her career, the “Mother of Family Therapy” Virginia Satir strove to make life work better: for the individual, for families, for the entire world. With a training objective of “becoming more fully human,” Virginia believed that the principles for peace within families could be extrapolated to peace within the “world family.” Having formulated her groundbreaking philosophies from her clinical observations of hundreds of families in multiple countries, Virginia’s practices continue to impact the world at large, spreading peace and understanding. More than just a testament to Virginia’s legacy, Well-Being Writ Large is a window into her thinking—a “biography” of a deeper understanding of the nature of the human being and how that human being might live better in her or his world. Author, licensed clinical social worker, and Virginia scholar Barbara Jo Brothers has painstakingly researched and drawn from Virginia’s works—including books, articles, interviews, and transcribed lectures—personal notes made over the course of Satir’s career, and direct conversations during Brothers’s own extensive residential training to compile the most complete, most essential collection of Virginia Satir’s work.

Why do some countries and populations suffer from poverty and ill health, whilst others are more prosperous and healthy? What are the inherently global (trans-border) issues that affect inequities in disease burden and health opportunities for individuals and nations? Traditionally, the focus of global health has been 'international health': the concern for high burdens of disease in generally low-income countries. To answer these questions however, we need to modernise our understanding of globalization as a phenomenon. Health Equity in a Globalizing Era: Past Challenges, Future Prospects examines how globalization processes since the on-set of neoliberalism affect equity in global health outcomes, and emphasises access to important social determinants of health. With a basis in political economy, the book covers key globalization concepts and theory, and presents a thorough background to the field. Case studies, illustrations, and new research all combine to make this title a comprehensive and current discussion of the various pathways that connect globalization to health equity outcomes. It looks at changes in migration, labour markets, trade and investment rules, international development assistance, health systems, infectious and non-communicable disease risks, environmental health, and gendered aspects of globalization's health dialectic. In addition, it argues for a reform of the global governance structure, the significant role of human rights, and the importance of a strong civil society in achieving greater social justice in health. Ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate students in global health programs, global health scholars and practitioners in government policy and health/development NGOs, Health Equity in a Globalizing Era: Past Challenges, Future Prospects is a significant contribution to our new understanding of globalization and global public health.

The mythology of a primitive tribe is thought by its members to supply reasons for certain actions necessary for the tribe's welfare, and the author's principal object in this study is to show that in Western society today we have equally questionable systems of belief, which are not only false but extremely harmful. Therefore, he proceeds to analyze various current institutions, to strip them of their shams and to reveal their real nature. Originally published in 1939. From Research to Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health has been shaped to reflect the mental health needs of children and adolescents in low and middle income countries of the world. It also includes chapters on topics based on research and practice in high income countries which may have lessons and implications universally. The first section of the book takes a child and adolescent mental health services perspective encompassing epidemiology, mental health needs, and selected policy issues. The second section provides summaries of research findings into the mechanisms for problems frequently encountered in child and adolescent psychiatric practice: schizophrenia, mood disorders, and sleep problems. The third and last section is about interventions and practice. It describes the treatment gap between low and middle income countries in relation to child and adolescent mental health and shows how professionals or lay people may be trained to effectively deliver interventions. This monograph has been produced for the 21st congress of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) to be held in Durban, South Africa, in 2014. This is the first congress of IACAPAP in Africa, and it takes place at an appropriate time in view of the continent’s burgeoning child population, significant economic growth and wish to improve the populations’ health.
