It's a good thing lawyers are thick-skinned. From Dostoyevsky calling lawyers "a conscience for hire" to notorious bank robber Willie Sutton equating the legal profession to his own line of work, the world is filled with quotable quotes about those who practice law. The Trouble with Law Is Lawyers is a collection of the most scathing of these.Quite possibly the most insufferable, cursed group of "professionals" in the world, lawyers have a long, illustrious list of critics, including Shakespeare, F. Lee Bailey, and Alan Dershowitz. You'll find them all in this vicious little volume.

The Trouble with Marriage is part of a new global feminist jurisprudence around marriage and violence that looks to law as strategy rather than solution. In this ethnography of lawyer-free family courts and mediations of rape and domestic violence charges in India, Srimati Basu depicts everyday life in legal sites of marital trouble, reevaluating feminist theories of law, marriage, violence, property, and the state. Basu argues that alternative dispute resolution, originally designed to empower women in a less adversarial legal environment, has created new subjectivities, but, paradoxically, has also reinforced oppressive socioeconomic norms that leave women no better off, individually or collectively.

By any measure, the law as a profession is in serious trouble. Americans' trust in lawyers is at a low, and many members of the profession wish they had chosen a different path. Law schools, with their endlessly rising tuitions, are churning out too many graduates for the jobs available. Yet despite the glut of lawyers, the United States ranks 67th (tied with Uganda) of 97 countries in access to justice and affordability of legal services. The upper echelons of the legal establishment remain heavily white and male. Most problematic of all, the professional organizations that could help remedy these concerns instead jealously protect their prerogatives, stifling necessary innovation and failing to hold practitioners accountable. Deborah Rhode's The Trouble with Lawyers is a comprehensive account of the challenges facing the American bar. She examines how the problems have affected (and originated within) law schools, firms, and governance institutions like bar associations; the impact on the justice system and access to lawyers for the poor; and the profession's underlying difficulties with diversity. She uncovers the structural problems, from the tyranny of law school rankings and billable hours to the lack of accountability and innovation built into legal governance-all of which do a disservice to lawyers, their clients, and the public. The Trouble with Lawyers is a clear call to fix a profession that has gone badly off the rails, and a source of innovative responses.

This book is a synopsis of many medical stories. They include, but are not limited to rude personnel, kind personnel and many of the physical and emotional traumas that a patient and his or her family face during an illness. Illness is enough to deal with on its own, but as many find out the hard way, there can be so much more to contend with. Slow diagnosing, doubtful doctors and harsh criticism from those who are clueless are among some of the ordeals covered. It was difficult for me to live life outside of my chronic illness. My main symptom, or most obvious was fainting. I didn't think much of it at first. I knew it needed to be checked out, but thought it would be under control in little time. The surprises to me were outsiders who actually laughed when I dropped, adults as well as children: the most hurtful was the handful of family and friends who thought I was faking. I can't imagine judging any of them in that way. I hope this book touches the lives of those who read it no matter if you are the care giver or the patient or just an innocent bystander.

Nevertheless, during much of the state of emergency (which began in 1985 and continued, with one brief pause, until 1990), in a series of decisions dominated by Chief Justice, later Acting Chief Justice, Rabie and a small group of other judges (labelled the "emergency team"), the Appellate Division repeatedly and grimly vindicated emergency powers. Although there were occasional exceptions to this pattern, the overall picture was bleak indeed. Yet as other nations' experience attests, the Rabie court's decisions could have been worse, and Professor Ellmann suggests that they actually reveal the continuing, though sadly limited, impact of a genuine adherence to law. Moreover, since the retirement of Chief Justice Rabie and the appointment of the present Chief Justice, Michael Corbett, the court's decisions have come to display a marked and explicit concern about the effect of emergency power on human rights

This book is the most fundamental analysis of native title in the common law world since McNeil's Common Law Aboriginal Title in 1989. Through a broad and detailed examination of the jurisprudence across Australia, USA, New Zealand and Canada, it argues that the Australian preoccupation with 'tradition' is a deeply flawed approach. Dr Young points to many technical problems and a raft of unfortunate consequences for Indigenous people. He contends for a fundamental rethink."Dr. Young's book fills a huge gap in the legal understanding of Indigenous land rights... While his focus is on Australia, the book's comparative approach extends its relevance to all common law jurisdictions that are inhabited by Indigenous peoples. Everyone who is concerned with Indigenous rights - Indigenous leaders, judges, lawyers, land-claims negotiators, policy makers - will benefit enormously from reading it." - Professor Kent McNeil "Dr Young has undertaken a comprehensive analysis of the 'traditional laws and customs' focus that dominates the recognition of native title in Australian law - but the importance of his work extends far beyond the legal sphere. In showing how the 'tradition' approach is not supported by the weight of legal principle and is out of step with overseas precedent, he opens the way for a reconsideration of how Indigenous rights to land are, and should be, recognised." - Ambelin Kwaymullina
