Woot the Wanderer, a young boy from the Gillikin Country, has been traveling Oz for nearly a year when he arrives at the castle of the Emperor of the Winkies, the Tin Woodman. Over dinner, he asks the tin monarch how he came to be, and hears the story of Nick Chopper's love for Nimmie Amee, the servant of the Wicked Witch of the East, when he was still a flesh and blood woodchopper. the two will marry, the witch enchants Nick's axe to cut off one leg, the other leg, each of his arms, and then dice up his torso in turn, after which a tinsmith named Ku-Klip replaces the missing parts with tin. Unfortunately, though Nimmie Amee still loved the Tin Woodman, he no longer had a heart to love her. Then he rusted in the forest until Dorothy discovered him. Woot says the Tin Woodman should go back and make the girl happy, and the boy and the Scarecrow join the tin man on his mission.

The servants of the Tin Woodman all wore tin helmets and tin breastplates and uniforms covered with tiny tin discs sewed closely together on silver cloth, so that their bodies sparkled as beautifully as did the tin castle - and almost as beautifully as did the Tin Woodman himself. Woot the Wanderer looked at the man servant -all bright and glittering - and at the magnificent castle - all bright and glittering - and as he looked his eyes grew big with wonder. For Woot was not very big and not very old and, wanderer though he was, this proved the most gorgeous sight that had ever met his boyish gaze. "Who lives here?" he asked. "The Emperor of the Winkies, who is the famous Tin Woodman of Oz," replied the servant, who had been trained to treat all strangers with courtesy.

Rinkitink in Oz: Wherein is Recorded the Perilous Quest of Prince Inga of Pingaree and King Rinkitink in the Magical Isles that Lie Beyond the Borderland of Oz. is the tenth book in the Land of Oz series written by L. Frank Baum. Published on June 20, 1916, it is significant that no one from Oz appears in the book until its climax; this is due to Baum's having originally written most of the book as an original fantasy novel over ten years earlier, in 1905. Most of the action takes place on three islands - Pingaree, Regos, and Coregos - and within the Nome King's caverns. Since the original ruler of the nomes, Roquat - who later renamed himself Ruggedo, was deposed in 1914's Tik-Tok of Oz, Baum had to cleverly rework the tale to accommodate his successor, the well-intentioned - but politically motivated - Kaliko. The book was dedicated to the author's newborn grandson Robert Alison Baum, the first child of the author's second son Robert Stanton Baum. The Lost Princess of Oz is the eleventh canonical Oz book written by L. Frank Baum. Published on June 5, 1917, it begins with the disappearance of Princess Ozma, the ruler of Oz and covers Dorothy and the Wizard's efforts to find her. The introduction to the book states that its inspiration was a letter a little girl had written to Baum: "I suppose if Ozma ever got hurt or losted, everybody would be sorry." The book was dedicated to the author's newborn granddaughter Ozma Baum, child of his youngest son Kenneth Gage Baum. Ruth Plumly Thompson borrowed the plot of this novel for her 1937 Oz book Handy Mandy in Oz. The Frogman and Cayke's dishpan re-appear in Jeff Freedman's 1994 novel The Magic Dishpan of Oz. The Tin Woodman of Oz: A Faithful Story of the Astonishing Adventure Undertaken by the Tin Woodman, Assisted by Woot the Wanderer, the Scarecrow of Oz, and Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter is the twelfth Land of Oz book written by L. Frank Baum and was originally published on May 13, 1918. The Tin Woodman is reunited with his Munchkin sweetheart Nimmie Amee from the days when he was flesh and blood. This was a back-story from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book was dedicated to the author's grandson Frank Alden Baum.
