THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER As seen on The Joe Rogan Experience! A groundbreaking dive into the role psychedelics have played in the origins of Western civilization, and the real-life quest for the Holy Grail that could shake the Church to its foundations. The most influential religious historian of the 20th century, Huston Smith, once referred to it as the "best-kept secret" in history. Did the Ancient Greeks use drugs to find God? And did the earliest Christians inherit the same, secret tradition? A profound knowledge of visionary plants, herbs and fungi passed from one generation to the next, ever since the Stone Age? There is zero archaeological evidence for the original Eucharist – the sacred wine said to guarantee life after death for those who drink the blood of Jesus. The Holy Grail and its miraculous contents have never been found. In the absence of any hard data, whatever happened at the Last Supper remains an article of faith for today’s 2.5 billion Christians. In an unprecedented search for answers, The Immortality Key examines the archaic roots of the ritual that is performed every Sunday for nearly one third of the planet. Religion and science converge to paint a radical picture of Christianity’s founding event. And after centuries of debate, to solve history’s greatest puzzle. Before the birth of Jesus, the Ancient Greeks found salvation in their own sacraments. Sacred beverages were routinely consumed as part of the so-called Ancient Mysteries – elaborate rites that led initiates to the brink of death. The best and brightest from Athens and Rome flocked to the spiritual capital of Eleusis, where a holy beer unleashed heavenly visions for two thousand years. Others drank the holy wine of Dionysus to become one with the god. In the 1970s, renegade scholars claimed this beer and wine – the original sacraments of Western civilization – were spiked with mind-altering drugs. In recent years, vindication for the disgraced theory has been quietly mounting in the laboratory. The constantly advancing fields of archaeobotany and archaeochemistry have hinted at the enduring use of hallucinogenic drinks in antiquity. And with a single dose of psilocybin, the psychopharmacologists at Johns Hopkins and NYU are now turning self-proclaimed atheists into instant believers. But the smoking gun remains elusive. If these sacraments survived for thousands of years in our remote prehistory, from the Stone Age to the Ancient Greeks, did they also survive into the age of Jesus? Was the Eucharist of the earliest Christians, in fact, a psychedelic Eucharist? With an unquenchable thirst for evidence, Muraresku takes the reader on his twelve-year global hunt for proof. He tours the ruins of Greece with its government archaeologists. He gains access to the hidden collections of the Louvre to show the continuity from pagan to Christian wine. He unravels the Ancient Greek of the New Testament with the world’s most controversial priest. He spelunks into the catacombs under the streets of Rome to decipher the lost symbols of Christianity’s oldest monuments. He breaches the secret archives of the Vatican to unearth manuscripts never before translated into English. And with leads from the archaeological chemists at UPenn and MIT, he unveils the first scientific data for the ritual use of psychedelic drugs in classical antiquity. The Immortality Key reconstructs the suppressed history of women consecrating a forbidden, drugged Eucharist that was later banned by the Church Fathers. Women who were then targeted as witches during the Inquisition, when Europe’s sacred pharmacology largely disappeared. If the scientists of today have resurrected this technology, then Christianity is in crisis. Unless it returns to its roots. Featuring a Foreword by Graham Hancock, the NYT bestselling author of America Before.

Muraresku About the Original Book: There is a lot of scholarship on the cultural landscape of Ancient Greeks and early Christians, but almost none of it addresses some controversial questions that have been raised over the years. Did the religious rituals of the Ancient Greeks center around a sacrament of hallucinogenic beer and wine? Did early Christians borrow this sacrament and later replace it with ordinary bread and wine? Is the psychedelic renaissance of the twenty-first century a return to something familiar? To find the answers, Muraresku spends a decade digging into the history of the Greco-Roman world and goes on an epic journey that takes him to numerous archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, and Spain. What emerges is a well-researched narrative that is as shocking as it is entertaining. DISCLAIMER: This book is intended as a companion to, not a replacement for, The Immortality Key. The ancient Greece that invented democracy, and birthed all the arts and sciences we now take for granted, never heard of Jesus. Before Jerusalem, before Rome, before Mecca, there was Eleusis. 2) The Eleusinian Mysteries were a secret religious cult that flourished in ancient Greece, in honor of Demeter and Persephone, the goddesses of grain and fertility. They were performed for 2,000 years in Eleusis, a town near Athens. The cult was very popular and attracted people from all over the world.

One of the key enigmas of cultural history has been the identity of a sacred plant called Soma in the ancient Rig Veda of India. Mr. Wasson has aroused considerable attention in learned circles and beyond by advancing and documenting the thesis that Soma was a hallucinogenic mushroom - none other than the Amanita muscaria, the fly-agaric that until recent times was the centre of shamanic rites among the Siberian and Uralic tribesmen. In his presentation he throws fascinating light on the role of mushrooms in religious ritual. A section on the post-Vedic history of Soma is contributed by the Sanskrit scholar Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty.Brian C. Muraresku in his best selling book, The Immortality Key: The Secret History Of The Religion With No Name, used Robert Gordon Wassons work: Soma The Divine Mushroom Of Immortality as one of his research tools. Brian C. Muraresku's book features a brilliant Foreword by Graham Hancock, the New York Times bestselling author of America Before: The Key to Earth's Lost Civilization. Amanita muscaria or the Fly Agaric is not a well-known mushroom based on its scientific name or common name. Yet, the picture on the left, of this mushroom, will probably be familiar to the reader. In recent time, it is the mushroom that has been adopted as the "prototype" mushroom in western cultures. Its image can be seen in Christmas and greeting cards, children's stories, science fiction and fantasy illustrations, and in mushroom models. There has even been a great deal made of its connections with Christmas, but probably too much has been made of this connection and different interpretations of this theory is available. However, it is more than just a "pretty mushroom". It is a species that is thought to have had tremendous impact on some of today's cultures for at least four thousand years and has been thought by some to be at the root of the origin of some of today's religions. In 1968, Gordon Wasson put forth the concept that this mushroom was the "plant" that was referred to as Soma, in his now much cited "Soma, Divine Mushroom of Immortality". Wasson believed Soma was the mushroom that was utilized in religious ceremonies, over 4000 years ago, before the beginning of our Christian era, by the people who called themselves "Aryans". Wasson also believed the hallucinogenic properties of the A. muscaria to be the cause of the "ecstasy" described in the Rig Veda, the holy book of the Hindu.

Excerpt: HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN ALIVE PART ONE The immortality of individual life is a subject which has had vital consideration for all thinking people of the world in all ages. Those who have used their mind to contemplate the subject of life have earnestly desired to solve this apparently unsolvable mystery--to make immortality a reality, here and now; not just a hope that the reality of immortality will be realized in some future. This quest for immortality which has been sought throughout the centuries should awaken the thinker to realize that this desire is inherent in all who are aware of life. From whence comes this desire and Why? Because it is possible of fulfillment. The one reason the desire comes up in the mind, is that this desire could not be awakened in the mind unless it were possible of fulfillment. The fact is that desire must be possible of fulfillment, otherwise it could not be awakened in the individual. If the individual could have a desire that could not be fulfilled, the mind “would commit a fraud upon itself”. In fact, this is impossible. The Great Teacher of life’s immortality said to his disciples who questioned the ability of the individual to fulfill all desire, “To God (Mind), all things are possible.” Failing to comprehend that immortality is a present possibility, the teachers of religion have inspired a faith in the final comprehension and gaining of life’s immortality in a future realm beyond the present in that state of consciousness called the hereafter. It is worthy of consideration to remember that there is still a here in the hereafter. In other words, the teaching of the religions of todayleaves the impression that if the immortality of life is not gained in the present, it will be discerned and embraced in some future. This teaching encourages one to postpone the effort to embrace immortality here and now. If immortality can be comprehended and embraced in some future, then it must be possible to embrace it here and now. Why? Because the individual is always capable of doing whatever the individual will ever do. There must be a deep seated reason for this faith in life’s immortality. Something above and beyond the human mind causes the individual to cling to this faith in spite of the record that a very few have reached this divine consummation in the nearly six thousand years of recorded human race. Reference will be made throughout this manuscript to an individual known in history as Jesus, the Christ, or the Prophet of Galilee. We refer to him as the Master Christian. This identification is sensible, intelligent and genuine. This prophet of Galilee is the only one in the centuries to furnish to the people of the world, proof of the immortality and eternality of life. This he did, by reappearing after he was crucified, embalmed and was three days in a tomb. This Master Christian reappeared in the same body which was crucified, since the nail prints of the crucifixion were still in his hands and body. In this reappearing, the Master Christian proved that the body depends upon life or mind, and not life or mind dependent upon the body. This prophet of Galilee was a Master of masters. He was not a religionist, but a scientist. Like all true scientists, he substantiated this science by his words and works. He was also unaffected by the unwillingness of his hearers to comprehend and embrace his doctrine. His life and works are an example that all who will comprehend his doctrine can “do also.” He says, “The works that I do shall he (all who will adopt and utilize my doctrine) do also.” This faith in immortality as a present possibility received a strong effect on indi

What is health worth? What is beauty worth? What is life worth? And when does life stop being worth the effort? The detectives of the special-operations squad find themselves faced with these questions as they investigate one of their strangest cases ever. It begins with a routine surveillance of the local Mafia godfather, but quickly gets strange when they realize that after years of hostility he’s suddenly become the best of buddies with the local godfather of Chinese organized crime. A third player enters the scene; he turns out to be a plastic surgeon. The detectives at first suspect that they’re involved in some sort of insurance fraud, but it develops that they’re cooperating in a health scam that claims to be able to keep people young forever--in effect, they’re claiming to have produced an immortality drug. One of the detectives, Dan Martin, is divorced. His ex-wife comes to town, and they get together to discuss some old investments held over from their marriage. He is uninvolved and her second husband died two years earlier, so the old attraction between them starts to come out and they become romantically involved. Then Martin discovers the true reason she came to town--she has an advanced case of cancer, and she has enrolled in an experimental treatment program at a local hospital. She, more than anyone, is in need of an immortality drug. As the detectives investigate the health scam, they begin to build a case by slowly fitting together the pieces of the puzzle. The strangest piece of all is that the gangsters and the doctors who work for them may be using stolen human organs to create a drug to keep people young. By working hard and being smart enough to take advantage of good luck, the detectives finally get enough evidence to launch a raid against everyone involved in the scam. That’s when they discover the truth behind the immortality drug. A few days later, Martin’s ex-wife learns the results of her cancer treatment, and both she and Martin have to deal with the consequences.

The Human race is endowed with the gene of immortality. Our genome can endure thousands, perhaps millions of years. But what of our consciousness? Can we achieve the awareness of the immortality of our self? The Gospel of Thomas claims that: "whosoever finds the explanation of these words shall not taste death." An international group of scholars provided the translation of the Coptic text discovered in Nag Hammadi, while the author offers his explanation of the 114 sayings attributed to Jesus. He offers the Key to Immortality.

'It's a trip - engrossing, eye-opening, mind altering' New Statesman 'Fascinating. Pollan is the perfect guide ... curious, careful, open minded' The Guardian From the international bestselling author of How to Change Your Mind comes a ground-breaking exploration of our relationship with natural drugs Of all the many things humans rely on plants for, surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate, calm, or completely alter the qualities of our mental experience. In This Is Your Mind On Plants, Michael Pollan explores three very different drugs - opium, caffeine and mescaline - and throws the fundamental strangeness of our thinking about them into sharp relief. Exploring and participating in the cultures that have grown up around these drugs, while consuming (or in the case of caffeine, trying not to consume) them, Pollan reckons with the powerful human attraction to psychoactive plants, and the equally powerful taboos. In a unique blend of history, science, memoir and reportage, Pollan shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively. In doing so, he proves that there is much more to say about these plants than simply debating their regulation, for when we take them into our bodies and let them change our minds, we are engaging with nature in one of the most profound ways we can. This ground-breaking and singular book holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations, the operations of our minds and our entanglement with the natural world.

Can we who have been touched by the scientific, intellectual, and experimental revolutions of modern and contemporary times still believe with and degree of coherence and consistency that we as individual persons are immortal. Indeed, is there even good cause to hope that we are? In examining the present relationship of reason to faith, can we find justifying reasons for faith? These are the central questions in Self, God, and Immortality, a compelling exercise in philosophical theology. Drawing upon the works of William James and the principles of American Pragmatism, Eugene Fontinell extrapolates carefully from "data given in experience" to a model of the cosmic process open to the idea that individual identity may survive bodily dissolution. Presupposing that the possibility of personal immortality has been established in the first part, the second part of the essay is concerned with desirability. Here, Fontinell shows that, far from diverting attention and energies from the crucial tasks confronting us here and now, such belief can be energizing and life enhancing. The wider importance of Self, God, and Immortality lies in its pressing both immortality-believers and terminality-believers to explore both the metaphysical presuppositions and the lived consequences of their beliefs. It is the author's expressed hope that such explorations, rather than impeding, will stimulate co-operative efforts to create a richer and more humane community.
