When their son Rowan was born, Rupert and Kristin's dream had come true. But the dream became a nightmare when their beautiful boy developed a disorder that left him incapable of communication, tormented by raging fits, requiring 24-hour care - and shattering their lives. Then, one day, father and son were walking in the woods near their house and stumbled across their neighbour's old brown horse, Betsy. What happened next was unlike anything Rupert had ever seen. Certainly, the effect on Betsy was extraordinary: she went stock-still and bowed her head, wide-eyed and quivering before the child. But when Rupert lifted Rowan onto Betsy's back, the effect on his son was nothing short of miraculous: Rowan started to speak... Shaken but exhilarated, Rupert proposed that the family make a journey to the ancient homeland of the horse, deep in the wilds of Mongolia, where he'd heard astonishing stories of healing and transformation. So began an epic journey on horseback, from their home in Texas to the furthest reaches of the planet - a journey that would test their love, challenge their beliefs, and change their lives.

A prehistoric survival adventure about a boy and a horse who rescue one another, from the Carnegie Medal-winning author of Apache and Buffalo Soldier. "A boy without a clan was nothing. No one. A boy without a clan was easy prey." Oak, son of the Deer clan chief, hopes that this summer he will finally be allowed to join the hunt and make his father proud of him. But this year is not like other years - the rains have failed, his father has fallen out with the Bear chief, and everyone is mistrustful of the new creatures that have been spotted near their encampment: horses. Then Oak becomes separated from his clan with only a young horse for company, and it seems that surely the worst has happened. But perhaps not all animals are prey. Perhaps Horse can be clan too.

InShy Boy, with 100 beautiful full-colour photographs by Canadian Christopher Dydyk, world-famous horse gentler Monty Roberts reveals the unique rapport he shares with one special horse: a wild mustang. During a dramatic three-day ride across a hundred miles of high desert, Monty Roberts had to use all his skill to connect with the wild horse, and in a gripping, intimate narrative he relives their unique relationship. Throughout the year that followed, Shy Boy lived on the farm, full of impish high spirits, fascinated by children, earning the respect and admiration of his trainers. As his fame grew following the PBS documentary of his initial three-day encounter with Monty Roberts, he received visitors from all over the world, and Monty Roberts was asked, "Would Shy Boy rather be free?" With trepidation, he took him back to the wild to let him choose: Go with your herd, or stay with humans. What happened was exciting and moving - and deeply surprising.

But when he discovered Rowan responded to horses, they travelled to Mongolia - the spiritual home of the horse - where shaman healing hands banished the tantrums, the incontinence and the hopeless isolation. However, a year after Rowan's improvement, he started regressing. Only then did Rupert remember the shaman had told him that he and Rowan must make three more healing journeys. Journeying to the bushmen of Namibia and Australia's coastal rainforests and finally to America's Navajo reservation, Rupert discovered new ways of connection with autistic children using nature, movement and animals. Through the process of healing Rowan and using his Horse Boy Method, he learned to unlock children from the most severe autistic symptoms. The Long Ride Homeis the story of Rupert and Rowan's journeys - of incredible love and extraordinary adventure - that would test their courage and change their lives, and those of the families who joined them, forever. Narnia . . . where horses talk . . . where treachery is brewing . . . where destiny awaits. On a desperate journey, two runaways meet and join forces. Though they are only looking to escape their harsh and narrow lives, they soon find themselves at the center of a terrible battle. It is a battle that will decide their fate and the fate of Narnia itself. The Horse and His Boy is the third book in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia a series that has become part of the canon of classic literature, drawing readers of all ages into a magical land with unforgettable characters for over fifty years. This is a novel that stands on its own, but if you would like to return to Narnia, read * Prince Caspian *, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia. From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-British narrator Alex Jennings does a smashing job with C. S. Lewis' delightful classic (HarperCollins Children's, 1994), the third story in the Narnia series. The tale begins with a poor slave boy named Shasta escaping from his adopted fisherman father who plans to sell him to a brutish stranger. A dignified talking war horse named Bree helps Shasta flee. Jennings plays Shasta with refreshing gentleness-listeners get a sense of the boy's sensitivity and fear as he embarks on the adventure of his life. The talented narrator plays Bree with the right amount of dignity and haughtiness. This horse amuses with his witty observations about human behavior, and sense of equine superiority. The horse and his boy hope to travel north to Narnia, and encounter numerous adventures and strange characters, all beautifully portrayed by Jennings. The most memorable supporting characters are another escaped child, a tough girl named Aravis, and her talking mare called Hwin. Jennings brings these two adventure seekers to life with his crystal clear narration. Thanks to his skills as a storyteller, the action moves rapidly from one exciting episode to the next. Evocative music plays at the beginning and end of each side of the tape. This presentation will enchant young listeners and encourage them to read the other titles in the series. It is helpful for students to have read The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe before enjoying this, but The Horse and the Boy stands alone as enthralling, self-contained entertainment. Brian E. Wilson, Evanston Public Library, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal This is an all-cast dramatization of the third book in Lewis's "Narnia" series. Those who have read all seven books will be better able to put this performance in context, but the uninitiated will enjoy this adventure tale in which, once again, intrepid children outwit nefarious grown-ups. Shasta is a young boy living in Calormene with a cruel man who claims to be his father. One night he overhears his "father" offering to sell him as a slave, so Shasta makes a break and sets out for the North. He meets Bree, a talking horse who becomes his companion. On their way they encounter Aravis, a high-born girl escaping an arranged marriage, and her talking horse. Despite their differences the children and horses learn to work together to reach the freedom they long for. In the meantime, they uncover a Calormene plot to conquer Narnia. The performances are energetic, and the characters easily distinguishable. This recording should not replace the book but rather should serve as an introduction to it.
