'Masterful, an enormously readable narrative of the English people from the Anglo-Saxons to the present' Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times, Books of the Year In The English and their History, the first full-length account to appear in one volume for many decades, Robert Tombs gives us the history of the English people, and of how the stories they have told about themselves have shaped them, from the prehistoric 'dreamtime' through to the present day. 'As ambitious as it is successful . . . Packed with telling detail and told with gentle, sardonic wit, a vast and delightful book' Ben MacIntyre, The Times, Books of the Year 'A stupendous achievement ... a story of a people we can't fail to recognize: stoical, brave, drunken, bloody-minded, violent, undeferential, yet paradoxically law-abiding ... I found myself gripped' Daniel Hannan, Spectator 'Original and enormously readable, this brilliant, hugely engaging work has a sly wit and insouciance that are of themselves rather English' Sinclair MacKay, Daily Telegraph

Excerpt from Biography of the English Language: With Critical Remarks Upon the Works of Ancient and Modern Authors, and Some Account of Their History; Also an Examination Into the Present Position of English Among the Languages of the World In the remote wilds of Northern Europe a number of nations existed, each having a distinct name but all speaking diale'ts of the same language. The Saxons were one of these tribes, and several others who were near neighbors joined them on their settlementin Britain. The Angles, who were probably the most numerous of the confederates, gave their name to the island, and the Saxons on the other hand gave their name to the race, and the names of both were merged into the double compound anglo-saxon. At that time Germany consisted of many nationalities that were known under the general terms of Saxons, Goths, Germans, and Teutons. We therefore speak of our forefathers' speech as Saxon, Gothic, Ger manic, and Teutonic. These, however, mean the same people and the same language, and in speaking of the-english it is understood by any one or all of these names, and in that sense I use them inter changeably in the present volume. Excerpt from The Parallel Between the English and American Civil Wars: The Rede Lecture, Delivered in the Senate House, Cambridge, on 14 June 1910 It is for this reason that I have chosen an historical parallel as my subject to-day. The two events which I shall try to compare or contrast have a special interest for me one is the first political event in which I was interested as a boy, the other has been the study of my manhood. Their comparison has often been suggested by American writers. Mr J. F. Rhodes, for instance, in his History of the American Civil War, says, The most interesting and instructive parallel to this period of our history is the great Civil War in England.
