In Nora Zelevansky's hilarious debut, Semi-Charmed Life, an Upper West Side naïf, Beatrice Bernstein, gets swept up in the seemingly magical life of famous-for-nothing twenty-something, Veruca Pfeffernoose, while ghost writing her blog. Veruca's glitteringly opulent world soon seduces Beatrice away from her own insular, arty family with a promise of fancy parties, travel outside Manhattan (for once) and one desperately cute guy. But when her new glitzy lifestyle starts to take on dark undertones, Beatrice has to decide who she is—once and for all. With her own magical touch, Zelevansky deftly explores the world of rarified Manhattan in this sparkling modern fairy tale of first love, finding one's voice and growing up.

We grew up with the same parents in the same castle, but in many ways we each had a moat around us. Sometimes when visitors came they would say, "You are such lucky children; it's a fairytale life you live." And I knew they were right, it was a fairytale upbringing. But fairy tales are dark and I had no way of telling either a stranger or a friend what was going on; the abnormal became ordinary. Liza Campbell was the last child to be born at the impressive and renowned Cawdor Castle, the family seat of the Campbells, as featured in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Liza's father Hugh, the twenty-fifth Thane, inherited dashing good looks, brains, immense wealth, an ancient and revered title, three stately homes, and 100,000 acres of land. A Charmed Life tells the story of Liza's idyllic childhood with her four siblings in Wales in the 1960s, until Hugh inherited Cawdor Castle and moved his family up to the Scottish Highlands. It was at the historical ancestral home that the fairy tale began to resemble a nightmare. Increasingly overwhelmed by his enormous responsibilities, Hugh tipped into madness fuelled by drink, drugs, and extramarital affairs. Over the years, the castle was transformed into an arena of reckless extravagance and terrifying domestic violence, leading to the abrupt termination of a legacy that had been passed down through the family for six hundred years. Written with a sharp wit, A Charmed Life is a contemporary fairy tale that tells what it's like to grow up as a maiden in a castle where ancient curses and grisly events from centuries ago live on between its stone walls. Painstakingly honest and thoroughly entertaining, Liza Campbell offers a compelling look at what it is like to grow up with enormous privilege and yet watch the father she idealizes destroy himself, his family, and his heritage.

These tales deal with people living their lives under very different but real circumstances--at times humorous, at others full of irony, pathos and tragedy. We each live our own collection of stories, I think, which is why counselors exist--to help us make sense of what we've experienced in the past and discover new ways to live that move us in new, more productive and satisfying directions. There are elements that figure prominently in the telling of each story--a charm bracelet, people at a counseling session, travel adventures, COVID-19, guns, a comedy routine, a jailhouse, clergy persons in stressful situations, glitches in technology, and any number of 'boy meets girl' encounters, or marital situations. But always, these stories are compelling and true-to-life, even if most of them don't include real events experienced by real people--at least not in the original setting in which they occurred.A word also about this book's dedication. It is presented in memory of Frank Reinhardt Morris, who died just this year (on June 12, 2020) but whose influence, along with that of his wife, will last for generations. Initially, Frank was a pastor in the Chicago area but soon turned to psychology as a way to more powerfully impact the lives of people with whom he came in contact. Frank and Dixie were both trained as transactional analysts, but together decided that any one theory of counseling was far too limiting. Instead, they set out to develop an eclectic approach that melded all beneficial approaches into a new method of therapy they originally called Liberation Psychology. Over the years, each of them counseled a myriad of persons and helped them grow to become more mature human beings. They also began a series of three-year training programs that equipped 20-25 persons at a time to not only experience such healing therapies themselves but trained them to teach and apply that wisdom to others in whatever line of work they found themselves: as teachers, clergy, support staff, artists, sales reps, those in the medical field, counseling etc. Many of the stories in this volume make use of the insights and techniques that Frank and Dixie Morris taught and used to heal others, and their 'fingerprints' are all over much of what has been written here, especially in the story "Band of Losers."

In this enlightening look at J.K. Rowling's phenomenal bestsellers, a Christian minister illuminates the powerful, positive message Harry Potter and his magical world bring to readers of all ages. Potter fever has swept the world and shows no signs of abating. The books and the recent movie have attracted millions of followers and fans, all of them eagerly awaiting the next installments. Along with the widespread enjoyment and appreciation of Harry Potter and his friendships, however, criticism of the series has also emerged. The opposition has focused on two issues; the darkness of the novels and their apparent endorsement of witchcraft and the occult. In A Charmed Life, Francis Bridger, a theologian and pastor, argues that far from promoting the dark arts, the Potter books are firmly based in Christian values, and offer valuable insights into our characters, our relationships, our priorities, and our spirituality. Taking readers on an entertaining tour of Potterworld, Bridger shows that each adventure presents new ways of expressing and exploring key spiritual issues, from the meaning of justice, to the need to confront fears, to the debilitating effects of evil. As Harry and his friends deal with one another, face their enemies, cope with their variously dysfunctional families, and experience the common problems of growing up, Bridger demonstrates, it is their intrinsic human goodness, love, and friendship--not wizardry or magic--that allows them to triumph over evil.
