The Third International Conference on Synthetic Microstructures in Biological Research (SMIBR) was held in Williamsburg, Virginia, September 9-12, 1991. This book represents the compilation of many of the papers and posters presented at the meeting. Publications resulting from previous SMIBR meetings held at Airlie House, Airlie, Virginia (March 24-26, 1986 and March 20-23, 1988) can be obtained from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) Service Center (908 562-5418). The purpose of these conferences is to provide an interface between the engineering community and those at the cutting edge of biological and related material science. The overriding motive for assembling representatives from these diverse disciplines is clear. Engineers, even in 1986, could manipulate materials over dimensional scales on the order of those critical to biological systems. The devices that emerge from these manipulations could then be tailored to monitor system function more directly with significantly more localization than ever before. Thus, one important goal of the meetings is to provide the detailed specifications required for effective interfacing of devices with biological systems under investiga tion.

With sixty years of combined experience, the authors of this extensively revised book have learned to emphasize the fundamental materials science, structure-property relationships, and biological responses as a foundation for a wide array of biomaterials applications. This edition includes a new chapter on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, approximately 1900 references to additional reading, extensive tutorial materials on new developments in spinal implants and fixation techniques and theory. It also offers systematic coverage of orthopedic implants, and expanded treatment of ceramic materials and implants.

This book discusses nano- and microfabrication, and how biologists are using such fabricated devices in their research. The goal of the book is to inform materials scientists and engineers about the needs of biologists, and equally, to inform biologists about how nano- and micro-scale fabrication may help to shed light on their own particular research problems. The book also aims to stimulate innovative, productive interactions between materials scientists, engineers, and biologists; and, to explore ways that materials scientists and engineers can exploit biological principles and biological assemblies to produce new and ever-smaller devices. In addition to serving as a resource for scientists in the field, the book is also intended for any biologist or physical scientist who wishes to understand the current state-of-the-art, and what research is currently being done using biological nanofabrication.

Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this volume provides a unique insight into the principal characterisation techniques available for determining the size of macromolecules in solution, their structural sequences and molecular weight. Recognition of macromolecules as a distinct state of matter owes much to the availability of various techniques for molar mass characterisation. In recent years, significant progress has been made into refining and developing these techniques but there has been a need for a volume that describes all the principal characterisation techniques and their relevance to various types of material. This book reflects some of the most recent advances and covers such techniques as: * Temperature rising elution fractionation * Field flow fractionation * Static and dynamic light scattering * Neutron scattering * Vapour Pressure Osmometry/Viscometry * Ultrafugation and Sedimentation * Gel Electrophoresis of Biological Macromolecules * Mass Spectrometry of Polymers The book will be invaluable for all those who are concerned with the study and use of macromolecular materials. It describes the developments that have been made in methods for molar mass characterisation and also the size of molecules in solution and solid phases. As the problem of molar mass characterisation is common to synthetic and biological polymers, this book will be of interest not only to polymer chemists, engineers and technologists, but also for biologists and scientists in numerous allied disciplines.
