Most contemporary interpretations of the biblical book of Lamentations focus on the figure of the "suffering man" as a role model for submission in the face of God's punishment for sin. Yet such a model offers small consolation to survivors of the Holocaust or other mass atrocities and also ignores chapters 1 and 2 of Lamentations, in which the personification of Zion laments her sufferings and demands a response on behalf of her dying children. In Surviving Lamentations, Tod Linafelt offers an alternative reading of Lamentations in light of the "literature of survival" (works written by survivors of catastrophe) as well as literary and philosophical reflections on "the survival of literature." He refocuses attention on the figure of Zion as a manifestation of a basic need to give voice to suffering, and traces the afterlife of Lamentations in Jewish literature, in which text after text attempts to provide the response to Zion's lament that is lacking in Lamentations itself. Seen through Linafelt's eyes, Lamentations emerges as uncannily relevant to contemporary discourse on survival.

When Marvin McKelvey was just forty-seven-years-old, he suffered a stroke—an unusual occurrence for someone his age. This major stroke dramatically changed the way he would live the rest of his life. In this memoir, McKelvey tells his personal story of how he recovered from this severe mid-life emergency. Surviving a Darkroom provides intimate details of the dark void of his stroke, the critical surgery that followed, the paralysis in his left side, the pain of physical therapy, and the long process of recovery. McKelvey shares how his Christianity and his relationship with God helped him cope with the aftermath of his stroke. A story of determination, Surviving a Darkroom shows how McKelvey’s faith in God provided the impetus for recovering from a stroke that left him feeling alone in a very dark room. It demonstrates how he saw the light and crawled out of the tunnel to lead an independent life.

Will Dr. Lam be able to create Venus into the new Mother Earth, by resurrecting the twelve tribes of Israel and all the extinct species that once flourished on planet Earth prior to the great flood? Will Lam Brains new world be able to free the masses of earthlings from enslavement from the genes of wrath of the red planet? Will the elitist galactic oppressors (EGOs) from all of hisdestroy finally be resurrected and brought to justice to pay reparations as reasonable compensation to the Venusians for all the pain and suffering for almost four thousand years of enslavement and genocide of their ancestors? In narrative form, this book chronicles the five-year journey the author took with her father, afflicted with Alzheimers, to restore his dignity and help him reach his physical, mental, and spiritual potential. It presents the many obstacles, including the presence of evil forces and other family members mental disorders, which had to be overcome to accomplish this. The book illustrates how the common denominator of faith in God and a belief in His supreme will enabled communication with her father, with whom she previously had only limited interaction. She came to discover the importance of entering her fathers world, of confirming his reality, and to recognize though parts of the brain may be tangled and even gone, the response to spirit and tone actually remains. Her fathers sensory awareness and understanding increased, and she challenges some previous stereotypes held about patients with this disease. Pragmatically, the author gives the caregiver suggestions on how to ensure the patients sense of accomplishment and purpose and maps out daily activity processes. The book illustrates how previous experiences enabled them to survive their storm, as the author relentlessly struggled to keep her father from being institutionalized so he could remain a participant in this world. Occasionally, in a mans life, there is a book or manuscript that comes his way that is so far out of the norm and so deep beyond expectation that it requires thought, prayer, and time to assimilate the information through meditation. Theres a Storm Coming, Kathryn Huddlestons book on the subject of her fathers experience with Alzheimers disease and her passion to help him be the very best he could be physically, mentally and spiritually, is incredible. The journey with glimpses into the family life through the eyes of a person with medical insight, and ultimately, through a spiritual lens, allows us to take a peek behind the veil of one of the most difficult and tough situations facing many Americans today. This book is an incredible read for those who care about the condition of their fellow human beings. Maury Davis, Senior Pastor, Cornerstone Church, Nashville, TN Maury Davis Ministries God brings hope to us in stormy times. Through these dark years, compassion and care for loved ones is always first. This could not be more true than in this book. Michelle Stein, Executive Director, Alzheimers Solutions Project Center for Health Transformation, Washington, D.C. The author captures the readers attention by recounting in narrative form how she attempted to overcome the many challenges and trials in her stormy family in order to lessen her fathers turbulence and bring him peace in the last phase of his life. In an unassuming, authentic way, the author illustrates how she ensured her father remained a valued participant in the world. Giving caregivers concrete ideas on how she helped her father make decisions, ensured up-close and personal interaction with others, and recognized the importance of tone, spirit, and listening, the book should give them a sense of hope. E.L. Shoenfelt, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Western Kentucky University, Performance Psychologist Kathryn Huddleston believes that while in the midst of other life storms God gave her the gift to care for her father. Here she shares that journey in a very personal, detailed, and honest fashion. Not only is this a wonderful handbook for the Alzheimers caregiver, Kathryns story affirms my experience of Gods daily walk with those who appear to be absent. While we may see our loved ones as fading way, in reality, they may be living the old gospel hymn, Just a Closer Walk with Thee. This book gives the caregiver, or any reader, great spiritual hope. Nearly two decades ago, Mickey Zucker Reichert introduced fantasy readers to her greatest creation—the Renshai, a race of warriors who lived for battle and swordcraft, and who began training in the art of war from the moment their fingers could grasp a weapon. Set in a world enriched by Norse mythology, Mickey’s first two trilogies about the Renshai—The Last of the Renshai and The Renshai Chronicles—captivated readers as they followed the adventures of these legendary warriors who fought their way back from almost total extinction to claim a new homeland and find allies in a world where far too many still feared and despised them. Flight of the Renshai and Fields of Wrath continue the Renshai saga begun in the previous two trilogies. Opening eighteen years after The Children of Wrath ended, Flight of the Renshai focuses on the main characters from the second trilogy, as well as their now-grown children. At the center of the story are the three sons of Kevral Tainharsdatter. While Flight brings readers into the heart of the long-dreaded Great War, Fields of Wrath picks up the story in the aftermath of that war. With the Great War over, the Renshai have won back the Fields of Wrath. However, Tae Kahn—Subikahn’s father— becomes ever more certain that a far larger and fiercer wave of enemy soldiers is headed toward them. One Kjempemagiska and an army of their man-sized servants nearly defeated the entirety of the continent. This time, Tae is certain, the ranks will include hundreds of these strong, magical, Island-dwelling giants. The only hope for the peoples of the continent is to regather their war-weary troops and find a way to convince the few magical beings of their own world to assist them. Unfortunately for Tae, no allies are available to assist. It becomes a race against time as Tae and his friends struggle to convince the various Continental generals of the danger, attempt to turn reluctant, antagonistic mages and elves into allies, spy on the giant Kjempemagiska sorcerers, and seek some means to defeat an enemy powerful beyond contemplation.

Wonderfully well researched . . . engrossing, enlightening' The Hindu The Delhi Sultanate period (1206-1526) is commonly portrayed as an age of chaos and violence-of plundering kings, turbulent dynasties, and the aggressive imposition of Islam on India. But it was also the era that saw the creation of a pan-Indian empire, on the foundations of which the Mughals and the British later built their own Indian empires. The encounter between Islam and Hinduism also transformed, among other things, India's architecture, literature, music and food. Abraham Eraly brings this fascinating period vividly alive, combining erudition with powerful storytelling, and analysis with anecdote.

Although climate change has become the dominant concern of the twenty-first century, global powers refuse to implement the changes necessary to reverse these trends. Instead, they have neoliberalized nature and climate change politics and discourse, and there are indications of a more virulent strain of capital accumulation on the horizon. Adrian Parr calls attention to the problematic socioeconomic conditions of neoliberal capitalism underpinning the worldÕs environmental challenges, and she argues that, until we grasp the implications of neoliberalismÕs interference in climate change talks and policy, humanity is on track to an irreversible crisis. Parr not only exposes the global failure to produce equitable political options for environmental regulation, but she also breaks down the dominant political paradigms hindering the discovery of viable alternatives. She highlights the neoliberalization of nature in the development of green technologies, land use, dietary habits, reproductive practices, consumption patterns, design strategies, and media. She dismisses the notion that the free market can solve debilitating environmental degradation and climate change as nothing more than a political ghost emptied of its collective aspirations. Decrying what she perceives as a failure of the human imagination and an impoverishment of political institutions, Parr ruminates on the nature of change and existence in the absence of a future. The sustainability movement, she contends, must engage more aggressively with the logic and cultural manifestations of consumer economics to take hold of a more transformative politics. If the economically powerful continue to monopolize the meaning of environmental change, she warns, new and more promising collective solutions will fail to take root.

The publication of this volume is significant in three respects. First, it represents a major concern of the international mental health movement in its effort to gain deeper understanding of migration and its mental health implications in our increasingly mobile modern societies. Second, it epitomizes continuous international cooperation of colleagues dedicated to the cause of tackling this important mental health problem. Third, it stands as another milestone in the growth of the World Federation for Mental Health through its biennial world congresses. I sincerely hope that the empirical observations of real·life events contained in this volume will stimulate others to add their own experiences and perspectives on these topics at future congresses. It is also hoped that certain models of problem solving reported by the collaborators of this book may find wider application and that the results will be communicated to others. It is through such ensuing developments that the World Federation for Mental Health wishes to, and can, fulfIll its roles of advocacy and international communication in promoting international mental health. My gratitude goes to Richard Nann and his colleagues for having made this timely contribution available.
