This book employs computer simulations of ‘artificial’ Universes to investigate the properties of two popular alternatives to the standard candidates for dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE). It confronts the predictions of theoretical models with observations using a sophisticated semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Understanding the nature of dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) are two of the most central problems in modern cosmology. While their important role in the evolution of the Universe has been well established—namely, that DM serves as the building blocks of galaxies, and that DE accelerates the expansion of the Universe—their true nature remains elusive. In the first half, the authors consider ‘sterile neutrino’ DM, motivated by recent claims that these particles may have finally been detected. Using sophisticated models of galaxy formation, the authors find that future observations of the high redshift Universe and faint dwarf galaxies in the Local Group can place strong constraints on the sterile neutrino scenario. In the second half, the authors propose and test novel numerical algorithms for simulating Universes with a ‘modified’ theory of gravity, as an alternative explanation to accelerated expansion. The authors’ techniques improve the efficiency of these simulations by more than a factor of 20 compared to previous methods, inviting the readers into a new era for precision cosmological tests of gravity.

Current and upcoming cosmological surveys are turning their eyes towards the late time universe in an attempt to answer fundamental questions about its composition and the physical laws that govern it. Given the non-linear nature of the observables studied by these surveys, perturbative modeling approaches have limited faculty. Thus, non-perturbative simulation approaches are necessary in order to connect theory with observation and harness the statistical power contained in the deluge of data that will be collected in the coming years. In this thesis, I discuss a number of efforts, all centered around using simulations to interpret data and aid analyses with wide field galaxy surveys. The first part of this thesis will focuses on a model for galaxy formation based on the evolution of dark matter halos and subhalos in high resolution N-body simulations, and its extension to large volume, low resolution lightcone simulations. I then show the application of this model to the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the most precise weak lensing survey to date. In particular, I present the suite of simulations that I created with this model and show that it agrees well with the first year of DES (DES Y1) data. I will then demonstrate how this suite was used to test the analysis choices made in the DES Y1 analysis of weak lensing and galaxy clustering. Finally, I discuss an effort to use cosmological simulations as models for highly non-linear observables in galaxy surveys. First I will present a well validated suite of simulations suitable for this type of modeling, which efficiently spans a large cosmological parameter space. I will then overview the models that we built from these simulations, and the outlook for applying them to upcoming data in order to use it to its fullest capacity.

We present a forward-modelling simulation framework designed to model the data products from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). This forward-model process can be thought of as a transfer function -- a mapping from cosmological and astronomical signals to the final data products used by the scientists. Using output from the cosmological simulations (the Blind Cosmology Challenge), we generate simulated images (the Ultra Fast Image Simulator, Berge et al. 2013) and catalogs representative of the DES data. In this work we simulate the 244 sq. deg coadd images and catalogs in 5 bands for the DES Science Verification (SV) data. The simulation output is compared with the corresponding data to show that major characteristics of the images and catalogs can be captured. We also point out several directions of future improvements. Two practical examples, star/galaxy classification and proximity effects on object detection, are then used to demonstrate how one can use the simulations to address systematics issues in data analysis. With clear understanding of the simplifications in our model, we show that one can use the simulations side-by-side with data products to interpret the measurements. This forward modelling approach is generally applicable for other upcoming and future surveys. It provides a powerful tool for systematics studies which is sufficiently realistic and highly controllable.
