Description: The challenge of Christianity played a very significant role in the resurgence of Bengal in the nineteenth century. The Hindu intellectuals had to reinterpret his theological position to meet this new challenge which also made him aware of his own religious heritage. It thus helped the growth of a religious nationalism which culminated into a political nationalism towards the close of that century. The nature of this confrontation between Christianity and Hinduism is the subject of this book. Christianity appeared in Bengal as a western religion-the religion of her new ruler, and it posed a threat to the very way of life of a Bengali Hindu. The religious movements which grew out of its challenge did not remain confined to theological debates only, but had a wider area of operation and were associated with all other social movements which constituted and regulated the currents of the so called Bengal Renaissance. This book traces the history of the Hindu response to Christianity in its various stages and describes the nature of Hindu religious movements which reflect the complexities and confusions, the aspirations and failures of the Bengali mind in search of a new ethics and a new set of values. The book thus provides a general model of the study of religious confrontation in a colonial situation.

"Eternity can never fathom the depth of love revealed in the cross of Calvary," writes Haskell. "It was there that the infinite love of Christ and the unbounded selfishness of Satan stood face to face. The entire system of Judaism, with its types and symbols, was a shadow of the cross, extending from Calvary back to the gate of Eden, and contained a compacted prophecy of the gospel." What if you set aside time to look at the issues that are keeping you stuck? What if you prepared extra time to take care of yourself so that the process was enlightening rather than grueling? Shadow work is looking at the parts of yourself you try to ignore. Shadow work explores the areas you suppress or find embarrassing. Your shadow is often caused by thoughts and beliefs that you learned from negative experiences or that were taught to you by caregivers and peers. Bring these thoughts and beliefs to the light of day, and you can move forward without being held back by feelings from the past. We all do shadow work. When faced with a big change or stressor we work through what is holding us back in order to move forward. Unfortunately, most of us only do this work when faced with a crisis. We wait until we are so uncomfortable that we have to look at the issues that are causing us pain. This journal gives you a way to look at your shadow while in a relaxed state. Set aside time each year to unpeel another layer of your shadow and feel the release of letting go of old thoughts and beliefs that no longer fit who you are.

Grace in the Shadow of the Cross is a creative autobiography about how one little girl's unspeakable abuse became one joyful woman's testimony of healing. This true story is told in three voices: Ann's first-hand experiences are described through the character of Grace (who begins with the name Prophet). Accompanying her voice are those of Father God and Deceiver. Father God speaks mainly through Scriptures but also through private prayer conversations actually experienced by Ann. Deceiver's cruel voice will be all too familiar to abuse survivors. This book is for those who have known abuse as well as those who love them. It is for the broken, the beaten, the humbled, and the humiliated. Ultimately, it's a story of hope that will encourage you-no matter your past pain-that God loves you and desires to heal your heart. Ann Jorgensen is president and cofounder of The Word of Our Testimony, Inc., a ministry devoted to sharing individual stories of God's deliverance. She writes from her home in San Antonio, Texas, and is available for speaking on topics related to abuse and healing.
