The enormous, photorealistic charcoal drawings of American artist Robert Longo (born 1953) show the beauty and horror of the present day and age. His large-format works contrast the innocence of sleeping toddlers, the tranquil grandiosity of Earth and the planets, roses in bloom and Gothic cathedrals with threatening images of atom bomb explosions, fighter pilots, monster waves, sharks and the muzzles of revolvers. Inexorably and precisely, Longo records the state of our world; his powerful motifs give form and expression to the feelings of fear and longing felt by people in the 21st century, and affect the viewer with the full force of the medium. Back in print, this large-format, elaborately designed book--printed on natural paper using a tritone process, bound in half-cloth and distributed in four different cover designs--has been created in close collaboration with the artist and affords a comprehensive overview of his charcoal drawings from the past decade.

This catalogue focuses on Robert Longo's recent series of charcoal drawings of well-known Abstract Expressionist paintings. Rendered in charcoal, the original paintings are immediately recognizable, but it is the overlooked or imperceptible details of the complex surface, the tactility of the paint, the brushstrokes and the pattern of the canvas that Longo has made visible in his translation from color to black-and-white, paint to charcoal. Exploring his ambivalence toward painting, Longo's drawings address the historical magnitude of Abstract Expressionism in art historical and cultural contexts.Along with the Abstract Expressionist drawings, the book includes Longo's enormous seven-panel drawing of the U.S. Capitol building and a 17-foot high black wax surfaced sculpture of an American flag that appears to collapse into or fall through the floor.

Drawing has become the pre-eminent tool of both experimental and traditional art. The long-term definition of drawing as marks on paper is now seen as too limiting; it can range from the humblest doodle to monumental land lines. It is the medium used by artists as various as the painter John Walker, the land artist Richard Longt, the one-time minimalist Sol Le Witt and the young figure sculptor Antony Gormley. The last 20 years have witnessed the re-emergence of drawing and its importance to artists: the return to the life room sparked off by the preoccupation of R.B. Kitaj; the legacy of abstraction with the rich achievements of artists such as De Kooning, Twombly, Johns, Marden and Penck; the explosion of work that extended the meaning of drawing and the crucial influence of drawing on the new image painters of the 1980's, most notably Clemente, Paladino, Kiefer and Le Brun. "Drawing Today" is complemented by an assortment of attractive colour illustrations.
