On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower landed at the tip of Cape Cod, allowing the Pilgrims their first glimpse of America and their first contact with what was to become their new home. In the nearly four hundred years since their arrival, Provincetown, a charming and historic seaport town, has been an important port for fishing and whaling vessels, a favorite destination for vacationers, and a haven for those looking to make this unique community their home. Established in 1727, Provincetown first found prosperity in the trade and commerce of the fishing and whaling industries. At the turn of the twentieth century, however, the seaport's beguiling charms and innate beauty were discovered by artists and writers who flocked to the seashore in successive droves. The spirit and energy of these new yearround residents and seasonal creative individuals injected new life into the heart of the community. The more than two hundred blackand- white images in this delightful volume, most of which are from vintage postcards, chronicle the evolution of Provincetown--from the conception, building, and dedication of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument, America's tallest granite monument, to the activities of residents and tourists at work and play in the three neighborhoods of this enchanting Cape Cod town.

Tennesse Williams in Provincetown is the story of Tennesse Williams' four summer seasons in Provincetown, Massachusetts: 1940, '41, '44 and '47. During that time he wrote plays, short stories, and jewel-like poems. In Provincetown Williams fell in love unguardedly for perhaps the only time in his life. He had his heart broken there, perhaps irraparably. The man he thought might replace his first lover tried to kill him there, or at least Williams thought so. Williams drank in Provincetown, he swam there, and he took conga lessons there. He was poor and then rich there; he was photographed naked and clothed there. He was unknown and then famous--and throughout it all Williams wrote every morning. The list of plays Williams worked on in Provincetown include The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Summer and Smoke, the beginnings of The Night of the Iguana and Suddenly Last Summer, and an abandoned autobiographical play set in Provincetown, The Parade. Tennessee Williams in Provincetown collects original interviews, journals, letters, photographs, accounts from previous biographies, newspapers from the period, and Williams' own writing to establish how the time Williams spent in Provincetown shaped him for the rest of his life. The book identifies major themes in Williams' work that derive from his experience in Provincetown, in particular the necessity of recollection given the short season of love. The book also connects Williams mature theatrical experiments to his early friendships with Jackson Pollack, Lee Krasner and the German performance artist Valeska Gert. Tennessee Williams in Provincetown, based on several years of extensive research and interviews, includes previously unpublished photographs, previously unpublished poetry, and anecdotes by those who were there.

Seraphine is an ordinary Portuguese fisherman who finds himself a part of many extraordinary events. He and his family live in “The Town at the End of the World” where they experience the modest life of a seafaring family. But the idyllic simplicity of Depression-era Provincetown is shaken by the Second World War and the transition of the quiet fishing village to a bustling resort town. As Seraphine struggles with his sense of belonging in an ever-changing town, he experiences inexplicable events and fulfills heroic feats that prove nothing less than the strength of the human spirit. Seraphine is a novel that explores and condenses Provincetown history and lore into the framework of one family and their evolving life in the early part of the 20th century. It is full of playful humor, biblical allusion, local color, and immigrant sagas. Best yet, it is illustrated by the author with twenty-five black and white charcoal drawings that further capture the nostalgia of the tale.

Motif No. 1, a red fish shack, sits at the end of a granite pier in Rockport, Massachusetts. How did a humble fish house painted by numerous artists, including Aldro Hibbard, Anthony Thieme, Emil Grupp and Harrison Cady, become an icon? Author L.M. Vincent examines the shack's colorful history from its origins to the present day to answer the question. His exploration of this symbol of coastal New England, arguably one of the most painted buildings of its time, is a uniquely American story that will both inform and entertain.

As the United States struggled to recover from the Great Depression, 24 towns in Alabama would directly benefit from some of the $83 million allocated by the Federal Government for public art works under the New Deal. In the words of Harold Lloyd Hopkins, administrator of the Federal Emergency Relief Act, "artists had to eat, too," and these funds aided people who needed employment during this difficult period in American history. This book examines some of the New Deal art--murals, reliefs, sculptures, frescoes and paintings--of Alabama and offers biographical sketches of the artists who created them. An appendix describes federal art programs and projects of the period (1933-1943).
