The migration of cynical academic ideas about postmodernism into music journalism are traced in this book. The result of this migration is a widespread fatalism over the ability of the music industry to absorb any expression of defiance in popular music. The book synthesizes a number of fields: American and British academic and journalistic music criticism; aesthetic and literary history and theory from romanticism through postmodernism; alternative music such as feminist punk and grunge; political economy, which has fueled the obsession with commercial incorporation; and subcultural sociology.

"We're Bikini Kill. And we want Revolution Girl-style now!!!" In the early 1990s, a female youth movement named Riot Grrrl formed around the feminist punk band Bikini Kill. The band's singer, Kathleen Hanna, became one of the most visible and outspoken activists of Riot Grrrl, which gained momentum particularly in the Pacific Northwest and Washington, D.C. Jannika Bock looks at the beginnings of the youth movement and uncovers its reliance on Second Wave feminists and their works. In her analysis she traces Riot Grrrl's double allegiance: its indebtedness to feminism and the (male) punk scene, two seemingly opposing discourses. Culminating in a case study of Biniki Kill and their first CD Jannika Bock demonstrates how Riot Grrrl re-interpreted the punk narrative in feminist terms. The book is geared towards Americanists and Musicologists, former activists of the youth movement and all people interested in this exciting part of US cultural history.

Demonstrates how theories of postmodernism as 'incredulity toward grand narrative' speak to musical history and aesthetics. This book illustrates how music has figured centrally in poststructuralist theory and can itself open up fresh perspectives for reassessing that theory.

Woody Guthrie's songs about the Dust Bowl Migration and the Great Depression give expression to one of the bleakest periods in the history of the United States, bearing witness both to the economic and political turmoil and to the human erosion of the 1930s. Following a New Historicist approach, this study, incorporating a variety of previously unpublished materials, sets out to reconstruct the social and cultural potential of Guthrie's songs by exploring their manifold and intricate relationships with the cultural environment in which they were composed and performed. As a result, Guthrie's songs are shown to be deeply ingrained in the decade's culture: they criticize the deplorable social and political situation at the time, make sense of the incomprehensible and hint at those responsible for the disaster, thus amplifying the unheard voices of the down and out. By revealing that Guthrie's oeuvre was not only culturally produced, but also culturally productive in that it took an active part in shaping, perpetuating or undermining elements and patterns of the decade's cultural knowledge, the study also sheds new light on the social and cultural significance of the sung word.

America has gotten into ugly moods before, but never as today. In taking us on a guided tour of American acrimony, Peter Wood traces the roots of anger's triumph in our social and political world. He examines the liberating bromides of psychotherapists, the bellicosity of the war between the sexes, the broadsides of the ethnic separatists, and the jeremiads of fundamentalists of all stripes. A Bee in the Mouth is a provocative dissection of an alarming phenomenon.
