Partial evaluators are compile time optimizers achieving performance improvements through a program modification technique called specialization. Partial evaluators produce one or more copies, or specializations, of each procedure in a source program in the output program. Specializations are distinguished by being optimized for invocation from call sites with different characteristics, for example, placing certain constraints on argument values. Specializations are created by partially executing procedures, leaving only unexecutable portions as residual code. Symbolic execution can replace variable references by the referenced values, executed primitives by their computed results, and function applications by the bodies of the applied functions, yielding inlining. One core challenge of partial evaluation is selecting what specializations to create. Attempting to produce an infinite number of specializations results in divergence. The termination mechanism of a partial evaluator decides whether or not to symbolically execute a procedure in order to create a new specialization. Creating a termination mechanism that precludes divergence is not difficult. However, crafting a termination mechanism resulting in the production of a sufficient number of appropriate specializations to produce high quality residual code while still terminating all, or most, of the time is quite challenging. This dissertation presents a new type of analysis, called use analysis, forming the basis of a termination mechanism designed to yield a better combination of residual code quality and frequent termination than the current state-of-the-art.

Systems theorists see common principles in the structure and operation of systems of all kinds and sizes. They promote an interdisciplinary science adapted for a universal application with a common language and area of concepts. In order to solve problems, make recommendations and predict the future, they use theories, models and concepts from the vast area of general systems theory. This approach is chosen as a means to overcome the fragmentation of knowledge and the isolation of the specialist but also to find new approaches to problems created by earlier 'solution of problems.'. This revised and updated second edition of General Systems Theory OCo Ideas and Applications includes new systems theories and a new chapter on self-organization and evolution. The book summarizes most of the fields of systems theory and its application systems science in one volume. It provides a quick and readable reference guide for future learning containing both general theories and practical applications without the use of complicated mathematics. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: The Emergence of Holistic Thinking (2,002 KB). Contents: The Theories and Why: The Emergence of Holistic Thinking; Basic Ideas of General Systems Theory; A Selection of Systems Theories; Communication and Information Theory; Some Theories of Brain and Mind; Self-Organization and Evolution; The Applications and How: Artificial Intelligence and Life; Organizational Theory and Management Cybernetics; Decision-Making and Decision Aids; Informatics; Some of the Systems Methodologies; The Future of Systems Theory. Readership: Computer specialists, architects, businessmen, decision makers of all kinds, teachers and holistic thinkers."

Health informatics is a multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional field which seeks to facilitate the effective collection, management and use of information in the health care environment. Taking a socio-technical perspective, Health Informatics focuses on the interplay between the health careenvironment and the systems used to manage that environment. Highly practical in orientation, the book uses many and various examples of the different issues, priorities and approaches to using health information technology to assist students to identify and critique these differingperspectives.

Perspectives in the Development of Mobile Medical Information Systems: Life Cycle, Management, Methodological Approach and Application discusses System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) thoroughly, focusing on Mobile Healthcare Information Systems (M-HIS). Covering all aspect of M-HIS development, the book moves from modeling, assessment, and design phases towards prototype phase. Topics such as mobile healthcare information system requirements, model identification, user behavior, system analysis and design are all discussed. Additionally, it covers the construction, coding and testing of a new system, and encompasses a discussion on future directions of the field. Based on an existing mobile cardiac emergency system used as a real case throughout the chapters, and unifying and clarifying the various processes and concepts of SDLC for M-HIS, this book is a valuable source for medical informaticians, graduate students and several members of biomedical and medical fields interested in medical information systems. Presents a system development life cycle that can be used for developing different kinds of systems others than health related and also can be used for educational purposes Includes behavioral studies in the system development life cycle to assist in the design of systems with consideration of users’ behavior, which is even more important for medical systems Uses a real mobile cardiac emergency system as an example for systems development

"Australia welcomes this Fourth Interntional Conference on Nursing Use of Computers and Information Science. The conference aim is to provide an opportunity for the sharing of knowledge and experiences regarding the use of information technology in health care. The theme is "Nurses Managing Information in Health Care". This was chosen as health care management, particularly hospital management, has undergone many changes since the United States of America led the change through its use of diagnosis related groups (DRG's) for funding purposes."--p. vi.
