This story begins with a short, slanderous political attack by one writer, and continues with a lengthy rebuttal by another—a self-appointed target who took it upon himself to respond in kind: in verse. Written in 1944 in response to Soviet Armenian writer Gevorg Abov's «Մենք չենք մոռացել» ("Menk chenk moratsel," "We Have Not Forgotten"), and published the following year, «Թուղթ առ Երեւան» (Tught ar Yerevan, Letter to Yerevan) made Tzarukian a prominent voice in the Armenian Diaspora almost overnight—from the Middle East to Europe and the Americas. The poem was republished more than a dozen times in various Armenian communities—including in Syria, the United States, Lebanon, and Cyprus—up until the early 1990s, and as a result became a source of inspiration for tens of thousands. Published by the 120-year-old Hairenik Press, this is the first English translation of Tzarukian's Letter to Yerevan. The translation was a collaborative effort between the former director of the ARF and First Republic of Armenia Archives and former editor of the Armenian Review Tatul Sonentz-Papazian and former editor of the Armenian Weekly Rupen Janbazian. It features an in-depth introduction by another former editor of the Armenian Weekly and the volume’s English editor, Vahe Habeshian, as well as six original illustrations by Yerevan-based artist Meruzhan Khachatryan. The Armenian language republication was edited by Yeprem Tokjian of Toronto. The publication of Letter to Yerevan is the first of several initiatives planned celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Hairenik Association. All the proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Hairenik Association’s Newspaper Digitization Project. Praise for Letter to Yerevan "Letter to Yerevan (1945) is urgent and timeless. It may seem easy to turn the page on an oeuvre penned in a political context that no longer exists. Yet Andranik Tzarukian’s powerful poetic rebuttal continues to resonate. When, as in the aftermath of the Velvet Revolution in Armenia, ‘Dashnak dogs’ and other Abov-esque tropes are unleashed, Tzarukian’s Letter is the best antidote. Hence its urgency. When history is distorted and ‘alternative facts’ are tossed around, Tzarukian’s Letter is highly relevant. Hence its timelessness. Translators Sonentz-Papazian and Janbazian, two generations apart, are themselves testament to the enduring power of this work that reaches English-language readers on the 100th anniversary of the First Armenian Republic." - Khatchig Mouradian, PhD Columbia University «Անդրանիկ Ծառուկեան ոչ Սիամանթօ մըն է, ոչ Վարուժան մը եւ ոչ ալ Պ. Among his most prominent works, «Մանկութիւն չունեցող մարդիկ» (People Without a Childhood, 1955) and «Երազային Հալէպը» (Ethereal Aleppo, 1980) are autobiographical accounts dedicated to his childhood life in the orphanage of Aleppo. He published only one collection of verse, Aragastner (Sails), and bade farewell to poetry in Tught ar Yerevan (Letter to Yerevan). Nineteenth-century Armenia was a zone of competition between the Persian, Ottoman, and the Russian Empires. Yet over the course of the century a new generation of Armenian journalists, scholars, and writers worked to transform their geographically, socially, and linguistically fragmented communities threatened by regional isolation and dissent, into a patriotic and nationally conscious population. Lisa Khachaturian seeks to explain how this profoundly divided society managed to achieve a common cultural bond. The national project that captivated nineteenth-century Eastern Armenian intellectuals was a daunting task, especially since their efforts were directed in the Caucasus--a territory known for its volatile history, its ethnic heterogeneity, and its linguistic complexity. Although this cultural and social maelstrom was both aggravated and tempered by the new Russian arena of economic growth, urban development, and heightened technology and communication, diversity was hardly a recent phenomenon in the region; it had been an endemic part of Caucasian history for centuries. Armenians were no exception to this. While the Georgians, bound to their landed nobility, generally lived within kingdoms, the Armenians experienced centuries of forced resettlement, migration, and centuries of habitation among other peoples. Some Armenians had settled in faraway countries, but many remained in scattered colonies within the boundaries of historic Armenia. This is a study of the formation of modern Armenian national consciousness under Imperial Russian rule. The Tsarist acquisition of Armenian-populated territory and consequent efforts to integrate this territory into the empire imposed sufficient unity to provide a basis for a nascent national movement. The particular influences of Russian imperial rule met the Eastern Armenian communities to create a new environment for a modern national revival. This book reviews how nineteenth-century Armenian intellectuals discussed and conceived of the nation through the formation of the Armenian press. This is a rare blend of national culture and communication networking.

On a Quest of the Light is a story of betrayal, heroism, passion, and love—both for a woman and a country. Paruyr Hayrikyan, architect of Armenia’s independence movement and author of this book, presents his experiences as a freedom fighter through a letter to the love of his youth whom he lost during his eighteen years in prison and exile for dissident activity under the repressive Soviet regime. Written in the form of a personal memoir, On a Quest of the Light tells a chapter in the history of the fall of the Soviet empire that is rich with crucially important and nearly forgotten details of the story of a former Soviet republic’s journey to statehood. The letter/memoir tells the tragic love story of the naive and innocent Lusineh and the helpless romantic and democratic leader Paruyr (whom Lusineh only knows by the pseudonym Varujan) against the backdrop of Paruyr’s struggle to liberate Armenia from the USSR by way of national referendum. While one chapter describes twenty-four-year-old Paruyr’s excitement at his and Lusineh’s first kiss, the next describes Paruyr’s despair upon being sentenced to fourteen more years in prison. Parallel to the dissident activity in Armenia, the memoirs also discuss dissident movements from across the Soviet Union (Ukrainian, Russian, Georgian, Jewish, and pre-Baltic movements) through Paruyr’s friendships with his counterparts in other Soviet republics, owing to their shared sufferings in Soviet prisons and shared dreams of freedom for their respective nations.

In his Letter to the Armenians, Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, draws on local tradition to respond to queries by the nascent Armenian Church regarding baptism and the Eucharist. He addresses his letter to Vrt`anes, elder son and second successor to Gregory the Illuminator as head of the Armenian Church, and reveals much about the nature of pre-Nicene Armenian Christianity and its affinities with East Syrian baptismal and eucharistic traditions thought to stand in need of reform. Terian's study of Macarius - Letter to the Armenians establishes the date of this earliest document bearing on the history of the Armenian Church, and highlights the document's place in the baptismal and eucharistic liturgy of Jerusalem prior to Cyril's Catechetical Lectures and in the travel diary of the nun Egeria later in the fourth century.

This paper discusses findings of the Fourth Review of Armenia’s economic performance under a program supported by Extended Fund Facility and Extended Credit Facility Arrangements. Adherence to the policies agreed under the IMF-supported program has played an important role in helping Armenia restore solid growth. The 2011 fiscal deficit was well below program targets, reflecting restrained spending. The deficit is likely to be moderately higher in 2012, but still in line with the program, and with higher expected revenues allowing for increases in priority spending.

Preserving Armenia's rich literary tradition from a multitude of viewpoints has been the aim of this three-volume work. This third volume joins the previous two in making excerpts of Armenian masterpieces accessible in beautifully rendered English translations, while enabling readers to enjoy the immediacy of these works through lively discussions of the authors and their times. Here the focus is on the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. The volume begins with a comprehensive overview of the entire historical, social, and literary panorama of the periods covered: the Armenian Renaissance, the development of modern Armenian (with its Western and Eastern versions), the emergence of a national identity and democratic thinking (with their impact on literature and theater), and such literary schools as Romanticism, Realism, and Aestheticism. Biographies of more than 130 prominent authors appear in these pages, together with critical comments concerning their works and extensive excerpts from the works themselves. The texts are edited, annotated with footnotes, and presented in a format that permits easy comprehension. Literature unveils a rich pageant of works in historical perspective. The varied experiences from the Armenian past come alive, allowing for new understandings and comparisons to literatures of other nations.
