With a text revised and corrected by the author, this definitive edition of Individuation in Fairy Tales is rich with insights from religion, literature, and myth. Dr. von Franz focuses on the symbolism of the bird motif in six fairy tales of Europe and Asia: "The White Parrot" (Spain), "The Bath Bagerd" (Persia), "Princess Hassan Pasha" (Turkestan), "The Bid Flower Triller" (Iran), "The Nightingale Giser" (Balkans), and "The Bird Wehmus" (Austria). She explores the themes of psychological and spiritual transformation in the varied images of birds, such as the phoenix, the parrot, and the griffin. Special attention is given to the connection between fairy tales and alchemy and to the guidance that fairy tales give to therapeutic work.

This groundbreaking volume argues that Carmen Martn Gaite and Carl Jung form an ideal combination. All the main features of the Jungian individuation process are present in the Spanish writer's fairy tales: dreams, shadow figures, wise men and women, the Self, anima and animus. Martn Gaite has been described by the critic Salustiano Martn as trying to offer human beings a different way. In this accessible new study, Anne-Marie Storrs claims that this way is found through the process of individuation - the psychological development of a unique individual - and that aspects of the process are imaginatively depicted in the three shorter fairy tales, El castillo de las tres murallas, El pastel del diablo and Caperucita en Manhattan, and in the novel so closely linked with Hans Christian Andersen's tale, La reina de las nieves. Drawing on the work of Jungian writers to clarify and illuminate its argument, this book takes an entirely new perspective on Martn Gaite's work and, in doing so, challenges the prejudice and suspicion that too many in the humanities and beyond continue to experience when they come face to face with Jung.

In this book Steven Walker carefully leads the reader through the fundamentals of the psychology that underlies Jung's theory of myth. He defines key terms and distinguishes dream from fantasy in psychological experience. He then traces the lineage of Jungian theory from Jung through such disciples as Van Franz and Neumann to contemporary archetypal psychology. By applying Jungian psychology to an array of myths to illustrate core concepts of this theoretical tradition, Walker fills a conspicuous gap in the current literature on Jung. --from back cover.

The Alchemy of Fairy Tales, Vol. 1 and 11, provides a template for today's scholars of fairy tales and of depth psychology for use in both the academic and clinical settings. The Jungian Scholar would have, from Jung's Collected Works, knowledge of the relevance of alchemical sciences to depth psychology. Few, if any, of the Grimm's Fairy Tales are accompanied by a multifaceted depth psychology analysis. Some promote a variety of archetypal themes but, to my knowledge, none overtly promote the complete analysis of individual fairy tales with the significance of alchemy. The Alchemy of Fairy Tales centers on a depth psychological approach in the alchemical analyses. These analyses show relevance in the domains of personal and collective dynamics of individuation and, therefore, co-creation. Using original translations of Grimm's Fairy Tales, supported by a half century of clinical practice, this text exposes a variety of mental health dysfunctions as they move along a continuum from dysfunction to wellness-the movement from pathologizing to psychologizing symptoms. The main themes in this book are: Alchemy as vibrational sciences; astrology, numerology, colors, chakras, sacred geometry, and spirituality and, through the use of imagination, are recognized and explored through the analysis of four Grimm's Fairy Tales. From the portal of a Depth Psychology clinical practice, recognition of the wholeness in each Fairy Tale become analogous to the individuation process and, ultimately, the Self archetype. Story, whether from a myth, dream or Fairy Tale, when experienced from the psycho-spiritual dynamic of co-creation, represents wholeness recognized through the evolution of consciousness.

A Jungian psychologist explains how careful analyses of fairy tales like “Beauty and the Beast” can lead to a better understanding of human psychology Of the various types of mythological literature, fairy tales are the simplest and purest expressions of the collective unconscious and thus offer the clearest understanding of the basic patterns of the human psyche. Every people or nation has its own way of experiencing this psychic reality, and so a study of the world's fairy tales yields a wealth of insights into the archetypal experiences of humankind. Perhaps the foremost authority on the psychological interpretation of fairy tales is Marie-Louise von Franz. In this book—originally published as An Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales —she describes the steps involved in analyzing and illustrates them with a variety of European tales, from "Beauty and the Beast" to "The Robber Bridegroom." Dr. von Franz begins with a history of the study of fairy tales and the various theories of interpretation. By way of illustration she presents a detailed examination of a simple Grimm's tale, "The Three Feathers," followed by a comprehensive discussion of motifs related to Jung's concept of the shadow, the anima, and the animus. This revised edition has been corrected and updated by the author.

The objective of this book is to provide readers with a comprehensive account of the childOCOs personality. The book examines in detail significant personality dimensions from developmental, clinical and cross-cultural perspectives. The intricacies of personality are exposed by means of the Fairy Tale Test, an instrument that attempts to track the preconscious and unconscious processes that OC conspireOCO beneath the behavioral and overt manifestations of personality. ChildrenOCOs responses to the FTT questions are assessed both from a quantitative and a qualitative perspective. Twenty-nine personality variables are used to rate the broad range of personality characteristics. No other personality test assesses such a large number of personality parameters. The qualitative evaluation of responses includes the analysis of 14 defense mechanisms, the study of the nature of anxiety, family dynamics, and the examination of ego integration and ego strength. The unique quality of this book is the use of the FTT in the exploration of the childOCOs personality, using large samples of children derived from diverse cultures. Additional advantages of this book are the chapters which focus on the research into two significant personality traits: aggression and ambivalence and the chapter on the analysis of idiosyncratic responses; the latter offers valuable information in the classification of original responses into levels of psychopathology. While the FTT has taken significant steps towards becoming a valid and reliable instrument, studies of its psychometric properties are an ongoing process. The book also includes examples, case studies and appendices for further study and review."

The chief disciple of C. G. Jung, analyst Marie-Louise von Franz uses her vast knowledge of the world of myths, fairy tales, visions, and dreams to examine expressions of the universal symbol of the Anthropos, or Cosmic Man—a universal archetype that embodies humanity's personal as well as collective identity. She shows that the meaning of life—the realization of our fullest human potential, which Jung called individuation—can only be found through a greater differentiation of consciousness by virtue of archetypes, and that ultimately our future depends on relationships, whether between the sexes or among nations, races, religions, and political factions.
