Gerard Richter, who was born in Dresden in 1932, is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and best-known German artists alive today. Yet, although his paintings are widely exhibited, his editions have attracted relatively little public attention. This catalogue raisonne, compiled through intensive research over a period of many years by art historian Hubertus Butin, Richter's former assistant, documents the full range of graphic and photographic editions as well as the artist's books, multiples, and editions in oil realized by the artist between 1965 and 2004. All works are presented in four-color illustrations for the first time, and three essays shed new light on the significance of Richter's editions within his oeuvre. In the editions, Richter has developed an almost encyclopedic system of pictorial practice, subjecting artistic media, genres, and historical paradigms to wide-ranging analytical reflection. In this process, he channels his deliberations on the changing cultural meanings of image and representation into a critical examination of the complex conditions and possibilities of artistic production in this age.

Gerhard Richter's oeuvre embraces in excess of three thousand individual works. Over a period of five decades he has created a stylistically heterogeneous, complex body of work that testifies to his status as the most important living artist of our time. This long-awaited first volume of the catalogue raisonné is being released on the occasion of the artist's eightieth birthday in February 2012.Dietmar Elger, director of the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, has spent years researching and preparing this publication. The five-volume catalogue raisonné of all of Richter's paintings and sculptures will be published over the next seven years. Aside from the richly colored illustrations, many of them full-page, it includes full technical details, information about the artist's handwritten notes, and the provenance, bibliography, and exhibitions of each individual work. This information is supplemented by commentary, quotes, and comparison images. The first volume encompasses the works Gerhard Richter assigned numbers 1 to 198, covering the years 1962 to 1968. A total of 385 paintings and sculptures are listed, including more than thirty of which were previously unknown.

This groundbreaking book explores the evolving concept of unfinishedness as essential to understanding art movements from the Renaissance to the present day. Unfinished features more than 200 works, created in a variety of media, by artists ranging from Leonardo, Titian, Rembrandt, Turner, and Cézanne to Picasso, Warhol, Twombly, Freud, Richter, and Nauman. What unites these works, across centuries and media, is that each one displays some aspect of being unfinished. Essays and case studies by major contemporary scholars address this key concept from the perspective of both the creator and the viewer, probing the impact that this long artistic trajectory—which can be traced back to the first century—has had on modern and contemporary art. The book investigates the degrees to which instances of incompleteness were accidental or intentional experimental or conceptual. Also included are illuminating interviews with contemporary artists, including Tuymans, Celmins, and Marden, and parallel considerations of the unfinished in literature and film. The result is a multidisciplinary approach and thought-provoking analysis that provide valuable insight into the making, meaning, and critical reception of the unfinished in art.

Color Chart celebrates a paradox: the lush beauty that results when contemporary artists assign colour decisions to chance, readymade source or arbitrary system. Midway through the 20th century, long-held convictions regarding the spiritual truth or scientific validity of particular colours gave way to an excitement about colour as a mass-produced and standardized commercial product. The Romantic quest for personal expression instead became Andy Warhol's 'I want to be a machine'; the artistry of mixing pigments was eclipsed by Frank Stella's 'Straight out of the can; it can't get better than that'. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, is the first devoted to this pivotal transformation, and features work by some forty artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.

"This volume makes available a comprehensive selection of Richter texts, several published for the first time. These texts come from all periods of his career: letters and interviews; public statements about specific exhibitions; private reflections drawn from personal correspondence; answers to questions posed by critics; and excerpts from journals discussing the intentions, subjects, methods and sources of his work from various periods. Complete with a comprehensive appendix, and accompanied by over a hundred photographs of artworks, works in progress, exhibition installations, and colleagues and family, this book forms a brilliantly illuminating commentary on Richter's art, as well as providing a thought-provoking discussion on the status of art and the artist in society today."--BOOK JACKET.

"Formulated in 1434 by Leon Battista Alberti, the notion that a painting is like an open window influenced generations of painters. At the start of the twentieth century, the window, reduced to its framework, was employed as a motif and a symbol in order to test the function of painting as a means of reproduction. To the degree that the window is empty, its painted depiction denies us a perspective of the world. With Fresh Widow, the replica of a French window whose panes are covered in black leather, Marcel Duchamp postulated a farewell from illusionist painting in 1920. At the same time, it marked a new beginning. This publication reflects on the development of window painting in art through essays and monographic texts on artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Ellsworth Kelly, Eva Hesse, Gerhard Richter, Günther Förg, and others."--Publisher's website.

In his investigations of the nature of the constructed image and the perception of truth versus fiction, Gerhard Richter, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, has worked in numerous styles and playfully but astutely questioned our expectations of both photography and painting. Expanding on his study of the nature of looking, Richter has also experimented with windows, mirrors, and the frame throughout his career. This series of eight gray, mirrored panels, created on the occasion of a commission from the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, is part of the particular aspect of his oeuvre focused on in Eight Gray: the importance of the Mirror series, projects in glass, gray monochromes, and related works. More than 50 images of drawings and other works dating from 1965 to the present, as well as studies for the Berlin installation, are illustrated alongside an essay by Richter expert Benjamin H. D. Buchloh and a focused bibliography. No other publication has been dedicated to the understanding and analysis of this significant segment of the artist's career.
