Academic writing can intimidate students, especially those writing in a second language (L2). Even L2 students with strong grammar knowledge tend to perform below their first-language (L1) counterparts n applying this knowledge to their writing. Compared to L1 students, L2 students often need more time and effort to produce quality writing. Thus, traditional assessments such as in-class writing exams or high-stakes essays may not provide an accurate measure of an L2 student's ability to write.
