Public understand that the current quality of human resources in Indonesia, as measured by the world community with the HDI (Human Development Index), is lower compared to that in other Southeast Asian countries. The HDI is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for countries worldwide. This suggests that the quality of education, health, economy and environment are still lagging behind when compared to other countries. Particularly in education, currently the Ministry of Education and Culture continues to improve the quality of students in Indonesia, ranging from early childhood education to higher education. Especially for higher learning institutions, to implement their missions they encounter the various challenges, one of which is that graduates of universities in Indonesia lack the solid softskills, though their GPA are above the average. The graduates of universities in Indonesia do not have good communication skills, they usually have a lack of confidence and lack of initiative, and they are less cooperative, dishonest, and less resilient to face the world changes. Because of the conception and development of Posdaya (Family Empowerment Post), which was established in 2007, Center for Human Resources Development (CHRD), Research and Community Empowerment Institute, IPB-University believes that Posdaya is an icon of empowerment that should be adopted by all parties. Therefore, CHRD IPB-University continues to innovate and develop Posdaya through various ways, namely student scientific competitions, Posdaya practical works, Posdaya research programs, IbM (Science and technology for community) program, publicized Posdaya on the mess media, efforts to adopt Posdaya program into the local government programs, Posdaya Learning Center, Thematic Posdaya KKN, Go Field Posdaya, the attachment of plant clinic, nutritional clinic and animal production clinic into Posdaya programs, and the initiation of CSR empowerment programs for Posdaya. One of the innovations made is to publish the Posdaya publications. This book consist of 12 chapters, published to disseminate the research information about the Posdaya. It is expected that the book will improve the community understanding on Posdaya. The increased understanding will help improve the quality of Posdaya.

Jakarta is a fascinating city. It's attraction lies in the incredibly wide variety of people - Indonesians, Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Europeans - who have arrived over the centuries, bringing with them their own habits, folklore and culture. Their descendants have resulted in a vibrant mix of people, most of them making a living along the thousands of small lanes and alleys that criss-cross the kampungs of this enormous city. Artefacts indicate that this area was inhabited from the fifth century. Hundreds of years later, a small trading post on the coast named Kelapa was founded and eventually grew into the mega-city of Jakarta with over twenty million people. This book provides a unique look at the history of Jakarta through the eyes of individuals who have walked its streets through the ages, revealing how some of the challenges confronting the city today - congestion, poverty, floods and land subsidence - mirror the struggles the city has had to face in the past.

The pages that follow are an account of a personal excursion into the world of the wayang golek puppet theater of Indonesia, a world populated by marvelous puppets, the carvers who create them, the musicians whose orchestra accompanies the puppet theater, the audiences whose lives they influence, and the puppet masters themselves, whose powers are respected by villager and city dweller alike. . . . My original intention was to write a history of the origins of the wayang golek theater, but I quickly realized that the puppeteers are as fascinating as the puppets. The project shifted to an oral history of wayang golek, told in the voices of the puppet masters themselves. Their interpretation of the ideas embedded in the structure of the wayang, their individual philosophies, and their personal reminiscences, interspersed with anecdotes of supernatural events, convey the world of the wayang golek theater directly and personally, in a way that traditional analysis cannot. -- from the Preface
