Learn the basics of reactive programming and how it makes apps more responsive. This book shows you how to incorporate reactive programming into existing development products and cycles using RXSwift and RXCocoa on iOS and Mac. As we move away from the traditional paradigm of typing or touching one step at a time to interact with programs, users expect apps to adapt and not need constant hand-holding. People today expect their devices to do much more than just follow commands. They expect devices to react and adapt. Reactive programming, a new term for asynchronous processing, requires new app architectures, and you'll learn how these are already built into iOS and macOS in many places. As part of this more complex environment, you'll move beyond Cocoa and Cocoa Touch to incorporate data from Amazon Web Services (AWS), JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), and other formats, and standards. Together with the concepts of reactive programming and RxSwift, these tools help you build more powerful and useful apps that have wide appeal and use. What You'll Learn Work with tools such as Darwin microkernel, RxSwift, and RxCocoa Use Git repositiories and other resoucrces to get into coding Create apps that adapt to gestures and UI interaction as well as what's happening in and around the environment of the app itself. Who This Book Is For This book is for Swift programmers interested in learning to create reactive apps with RxSwift.

Jonathan Swift's angers were all too real, though Swift was temperamentally equivocal about their display. Even in his most brilliant satire, A Tale of a Tub, the aggressive vitality of the narrative is designed, for all the intensity of its sting, never to lose its cool. Yet Swift's angers are partly self-implicating, since his own temperament was close to the things he attacked, and behind his angers are deep self-divisions. Though he regarded himself as 'English' and despised the Irish 'natives' over whom the English ruled, Swift became the hero of an Irish independence he would not have desired. In this magisterial account, Claude Rawson, widely considered the leading Swift scholar of our time, brings together recent work, as well as classic earlier discussions extensively revised, offering fresh insights into Swift's bleak view of human nature, his brilliant wit, and the indignations and self-divisions of his writings and political activism.

This book traces Swift's fluctuating reception in Ireland through the centuries, finding in Swift's ambivalence about his homeland - which he could not love even as he defended its cause - echoes and anticipations of the ambiguities that have marked the development of Irish identity at large. Mahony looks at Swift's posthumous reputation in literary culture and examines his unusual place in Irish political rhetoric. He shows that Swift's patriotic reputation suffered in the later eighteenth century through its seeming irrelevance to shifting political circumstances.

In Swift and the Artsùthe first comprehensive study of Swift and the non-literary artsùJoseph McMinn challenges the widespread view shared by Swift's biographer, Irvin Ehrenpreis, that Swift largely ignored most artistic and cultural activities outside literature. The study presents a systematic, historical account of Swift's engagement with a range of artistic activities in both Ireland and England, principally in the areas of music, gardening, theater, architecture, and painting, and shows how the "sister arts" provoked and inspired a wide range of work in his prose and poetry. Swift's perspective on the arts is essentially sceptical rather than indifferent, satirical rather than earnest, and contrasts strongly with that of his close friend, Alexander Pope, one of the leading virtuosi of the eighteenth century. Swift is a shrewd and humorous observer of the changing artistic and cultural scene in both Ireland and England, and his views on these changes in public taste are an important, albeit neglected, part of his biography. His correspondence, especially his Journal to Stella, shows us someone very aware of the various arts and of their lively emergence from the enclosed world of the Puritan era. Many of Swift's friends and acquaintances were serious collectors of paintings, sculpture, coins, medals and Swift himself eventually enjoyed an interesting and revealing collection of artistic artifacts, as this study shows. His satirical response to some of the new fashions and trends in cultural matters, for example with regard to Italian opera and the emergence of "literary gardens," reveals new aspects of his religious and aesthetic values. It also shows that Swift, like many of his contemporaries, regarded some of the arts as "foreign" and therefore unsuitable to the British national character. Such a prejudice with regard to cultural imports sometimes reveals a conservative and puritanical aesthetic in Swift. As Dean of St. Patrick's, Swift was purposeful and dedicated on the question of music as part of the liturgy, and was very aware of the controversies surrounding sacred and secular music. Indeed, Swift's clerical role is shown to be fundamental to his critical discrimination between the comparative virtues of the arts. This book hopes to broaden an understanding of Swift's relationship to Enlightenment thinking about the role of the arts in eighteenth-century society, and to explore how the politics and the theology of his Irish situation determined his unique perspective on the arts. His views on these matters are an important part of Swift's lifelong arguments about the relative virtues of the Ancients and the Moderns.
