The Arabic verbal system is, for most grammarians, the keystone of the language. Notable for the regularity of its patterns, it presents the linguist with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the Saussurean notion of the indivisible sign: form and meaning. Whilst Arabic forms are well-documented, the elucidation of the corresponding meanings has proved more challenging. Beginning with an examination of the verbal morphology of Modern Standard Arabic, including an evaluation of the significance of the consonantal root, this volume then concentrates on establishing the function of the vowel-lengthening verbal patterns (III and VI). It explores issues of mutuality and reciprocity, valency and transitivity, ultimately focusing on atelic lexical aspect as the unified meaning of these patterns. This study is rich in data and relies extensively upon contemporary examples (with transliteration and translation) to illustrate its arguments, adopting an empirical structuralist approach which is aimed both at general linguists and at specialist Arabists.

As in any other situation of languages in contact, Arabic spoken in the United States is changing under the influence of English. It has incorporated different linguistic innovations, and interference from English occurs on the various linguistic levels. However, in many cases this interference does not lead to language attrition, but rather to the creation of an ethnic language with special uses understood only by members of the Arab-American community. Developed out of Aleya Rouchdy's own involvement and teaching of Arabic in the United States, this book--the first of its kind--is devoted to the full range of Arabic in America. In Part I contributors discuss borrowing and the changes occurring on the various linguistic levels of Arabic and the social factors that have contributed to these changes. Other chapters in Part I deal with code-switching between English and Arabic. Part II examines the shift toward English and the maintenance of Arabic as well as the attitudes that speakers display toward Arabic. Chapters in Part III are pedagogical in nature. The essays explore the history of the study of Arabic in the United States and examine methods and materials used in the teaching of Arabic, as well as some of the theoretical and practical implications associated with these different approaches. Primarily for readers with special interest in Arab immigration, settlement, and ethnicity, The Arabic Language in America will also engage the attention of sociologists, social historians, anthropologists, linguists, and sociolinguists, who will find the book relevant for their work.

Research in Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics has experienced a significant increase in contributions from varying fields of language studies, gaining the attention of scholars from all over the world. This volume aims to showcase the variety of topics relevant to the study of language(s) in colonial, postcolonial and decolonial contexts. A main reason of this variety is that the new paradigm invites and necessitates research on different subject matters such as language typology, grammar and cross-linguistics, meta-linguistics and research on language ideology, discourse analysis and pragmatics. The contributions of this volume are selected, peer-reviewed papers which were partly invited and partly given at the First Bremen Conference on Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics, held in September 2013.

This important collection of articles by leading international scholars in the field of publishing and printing in the languages and countries of the Middle East results from a symposium held at the Gutenburg Museum in the Mainz in conjunction with the first World Congress for Middle EasternStudies (Wocmes) in September 2002. It embraces significant developments throughout the length and breadth of the Middle East from London, Malta, Istanbul, Cairo, Palestine, Sudan, Zanzibar, Persia, Turkistan, to Calcutta, covering the period from the first state press in the Arab world establishedin the early nineteenth century and bringing the issue right up-to-date with an impassioned plea for a cultural rebirth in Arabic typography (Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFares). The study breaks previously neglected ground with articles on the book production of the early Bulaq press in Egypt (1822-51)(Cheng-Hsiang Hsu); advertising agencies in Egypt, 1890-1939 (Relli Shechter); Arabic books printed in Malta 1826-42 Palestine (Ami Ayalon and Rene Wildangel); Christian missionaries and colloquial Arabic printing (Heather Sharkey); the early history of publishing on the East African island ofZanzibar (Philip Sadgrove); the participation of Iraqi Jews in European and Indian journalistic enterprises (Orit Bashkin); a young Ottoman exile newspaper in London, Hurrihet, (1868-1928) and its owner Osman Zeki Bey (Nedret Kuran-Burcoglu); Persian books published in Turkistan (Olympia Scheglova);and TULLIP, a projected thesaurus of Persian lithographic works (Ulrich Marzolph). This goes some way to fill some of the lacunae in our knowledge of the development of printing and publishing in the area. Much more emphasis needs to be given to the print media and its role in social, political andcultural developments; a second symposium is to be held at the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris in November 2005.
