“Ionic liquids will never find application in industry”, “I don’t understand this fad for ionic liquids” and “there is no widespread interest in these systems” are just three of quotes from the reports of referees for research proposals that I have received over the years. I wonder what these people think today. There are currently at least nine large-scale industrial uses of ionic liquids, including, we now rec- nise, the production of ?-Caprolactam (a monomer for the production of nylon-6) [1]. There has been a steady increase in the interest in ionic liquids for well over a decade and last year the number of papers and patents including ionic liquids was counted in the thousands. This remarkable achievement has been built on the hard work and enthusiasm, first of a small band of devotees, but now of huge numbers of scientists all over the world who do not see themselves as specialists in ionic liquids. The ionic liquids field continues to develop at an incredible rate. No sooner do I think that I am on top of the literature than it turns out that a whole new area of work has emerged without me noticing. Things that were once supposedly impos- 1 sible in ionic liquids, such as measuring the H NMR of solutes, are now widely applicable (see Chapter 8). This dissertation contains chapters describing two areas of focused research, namely chiral gas chromatography and the analytical uses of room temperature ionic liquids. The ability to enantiomerically separate chiral molecules has revolutionized the fields of enantiomeric and pharmaceutical analysis. For volatile compounds, chiral gas chromatography is generally capable of producing quick separations with high efficiencies and large peak capacities. The first part of this dissertation includes an introductory review of enantioselective gas chromatography including details of how enantiomers can be separated in gas chromatography, with or without employing a chiral stationary phase, A chapter is then presented describing the enantiomeric separation of a variety of sulfoxides and sulfinate esters on four derivatized cyclodextrin chiral stationary phases. The role of the derivatizing group and the size of the chiral selector are discussed in terms of enantioselectivity and enantiomer elution order. Room temperature ionic liquids are a class of ionic, non-molecular solvents. These solvents possess negligible vapor pressure, can be custom synthesized to be water-miscible or water-immiscible, and are capable of undergoing multiple solvation interactions with other molecules. The second part of this dissertation begins with an introduction of ionic liquids and a review of their applications in analytical chemistry. The remaining chapters introduce various applications and methods used to further characterize this intriguing class of solvents. A linear free energy approach is used to characterize ionic liquids on the basis of their multiple solvation interactions. A new class of high stability ionic liquids are introduced that can provide high efficiency gas chromatographic separations at high temperatures. The ability to form micelles in ionic liquid solvents using various charged surfactants is also presented. In addition, a class of geminal dicationic ionic liquids is introduced and their physico-chemical, thermal, and x-ray crystallographic properties are discussed. The final chapter introduces a thermodynamic model which can be used to predict enthalpies and entropies of solvation and provide an understanding of ionic liquid-alkane interactions.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of non-molecular ionic solvents. Their unique properties including wide viscosity ranges, nearly no measurable vapor pressure under room temperature, high thermal stability, and a multitude of varying solvation interactions, make them an ideal class of substituent of traditional organic solvents in various sample preparation techniques. The first part of this dissertation includes an introduction of ionic liquids and their applications in sample preparation techniques. The following chapters in this part introduce various sample preparation techniques using ionic liquids as extraction solvents. Tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (FAP)-based ILs have been applied for the first time as extraction solvents for direct immersion single drop microextraction studies. The high hydrophobicity and hydrolytical stability of the FAP-based ILs permit them to be used in the sampling of large volumes of aqueous solutions without dissolution or loss of the ILs. Micellar ILs (micelles formed in IL with theaddition of different surfactants) are used as extraction solvents to perform the extraction of 17 aromatic compounds from aqueous solution with a headspace single drop microextraction method. A novel IL-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method has been introduced, which utilizes an in situ metathesis reaction to form an IL phase for the preconcentration of aromatic compounds from water. In addition, the IL-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction is also applied to extract 14 emerging contaminants from water. The selectivity and sensitivity of the method can be controlled by utilizing FAP-based IL with various functional groups. Surfactant-like ILs show a self-aggregation behavior in aqueous solutions and have been a focus of recent investigations. The second part of this dissertation begins with an introduction of the surfactant and miclles, the micellization behavior of ILs, as well as two convenient methods to determine analyte-micelle partition coefficients. A chapter is then presented describing a method using micellar solid phase micrextraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography to determine the partition coefficients between eight aromatic analytes to three imidazolium-based IL micelles. The final chapter introduces the surface and micellar properties of two imidazolium-based ILs in aqueous solutions with the presence of several organic solvents. In addition, a preliminary study of the utilization of IL micelles as mobile phases in micellar liquid chromatography was presented.
