According to Billboard Magazine, “in many ways, Alice in Chains was the definitive heavy metal band of the early '90s,” while MTV.com has “placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands.” All Music Guide would further add that “Alice in Chains were arguably the most metallic of grunge bands, which gave them a definite appeal outside the underground.” As the band grew overnight into Grunge superstars from their initial signing to Columbia Records in 1990, Rolling Stone Magazine would further report that “Alice in Chains was among the biggest to emerge from the grunge scene that spawned Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.” Going on to produce such genre-defining hits as ‘Man in the Box, Again, Rooster, Angry Chair, Got Me Wrong, and Dirt among their 11 Top 10 hit singles on the Billboard Singles Charts among 19 Billboard Top 40 hits, Alice in Chains would eventually sell 14 million albums worldwide, including two Billboard Top 200 Album Chart # 1 LPs, including ‘Jar of Flies’ and ‘Alice in Chains.’ The band’s critical accolades would further include 6 Grammy Nominations, and an MTV Music Video Award win, and to date, Alice in Chains remains both a critical, commercial and fan favorite! Now, for the first time, within the pages of ‘Alice in Chains: in the Studio,’ fans get the first-hand account of how their favorite AIC hits were written and recorded, recounted via exclusive interviews with band producers including Dave Jerden and Toby Wright, engineers Bryan Calstrom, Ronnie Champagne and others, as well as interview material with band members, etc. A sure-fire hit with AIC listeners old and new, ‘Alice in Chains: in the Studio’ is truly one of a kind, and a must-have for any true Alice in Chains fan!

Chapters: Alice in Chains (album), Black Gives Way to Blue, Dirt (Alice in Chains album), Facelift (album), Greatest Hits (Alice in Chains album), Jar of Flies, Live (Alice in Chains album), Music Bank, Nothing Safe: Best of the Box, Sap (album), The Essential Alice in Chains, Unplugged (Alice in Chains album), We Die Young. Excerpt: Black Gives Way to Blue is the fourth studio album by the American metal/rock band Alice in Chains, released in September 2009. The first Alice in Chains album in nearly fourteen years, Black Gives Way to Blue is their first release with new vocalist/guitarist William DuVall, who took over from the late Layne Staley. This is the first Alice in Chains album released on Virgin Records and their first venture away from Columbia, who handled all of their previous releases. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA on May 26, 2010, with shipments exceeding 500,000 copies and has sold 1 million copies worldwide. The span of nearly fourteen years between the self-titled album and Black Gives Way to Blue marks the longest gap between studio albums in Alice in Chains' career. The band had been working on new material since early 2006, shortly before hiring DuVall as their new singer. By April 2007, Alice in Chains had been writing and demoing songs for the album, but the band did not show further signs of progress until October 2008, when they announced that they had begun recording with producer Nick Raskulinecz in the studio. The writing and recording process was completed on March 18, 2009, guitarist Jerry Cantrell's 43rd birthday. Musically the album sees the band return to the metal/hard rock style of Facelift and Dirt, some songs also have acoustic elements reminiscent of the band's two acoustic EP's, it also includes songs which guitarist Jerry...

Alice in Chains was the first of grunge's big four - ahead of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden - to get a gold record and achieve national recognition. With the charismatic Layne Staley behind the microphone, they became one of the most influential and successful bands to come out of the Seattle music scene. But as the band got bigger, so did its problems. Acclaimed journalist David de Sola follows the members from their inauspicious beginnings at a warehouse under the Ballard Bridge through the history of the band, charting: - The local hair metal scene in Seattle during the 1980s. - How drugs nearly destroyed the band and claimed the lives of Staley and founding bassist Mike Starr. - Jerry Cantrell's solo career and Mike Starr's life after being fired from the band. - The band's resurrection with William DuVall, the Atlanta singer/guitarist who stepped into Layne Staley's shoes. Based on a wealth of interviews with people with direct knowledge of the band and its history, many of whom are speaking on the record for the first time, Alice in Chains will stand as the definitive Alice in Chains biography for years to come.

(Guitar World Presents). In a relatively short time span, grunge music exploded out of its native Seattle and became the most dominant force of the early '90s. Groundbreaking bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains introduced a generation of young rock fans to their grainy, hard-edged brand of modern metal. The rise to prominence for these and other grunge monsters is detailed here, in Guitar World Presents Nirvana and the Grunge Revolution . The first section of the book serves as a tribute to the late Nirvana guitarist Kurt Cobain. It features revealing interviews with Cobain, a behind-the-scenes look at Nirvana's legendary MTV "Unplugged" performance, and an insider's guide to the making of their groundbreaking album, Nevermind . It has been reviled, dismissed, attacked, and occasionally been the subject of Congressional hearings, but still, the genre of music known as heavy metal maintains not only its market share in the recording and downloading industry, but also as a cultural force that has united millions of young and old fans across the globe. Characterized by blaring distorted guitars, drum solos, and dramatic vibrato, the heavy metal movement headbanged its way to the popular culture landscape with bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath the 1970s. Motley Crue and Metallica made metal a music phenomenon in the 1980s. Heavy metal continues to evolve today with bands like Mastodon and Lamb of God. Providing an extensive overview of the music, fashion, films, and philosophies behind the movement, this inclusive encyclopedia chronicles the history and development of heavy metal, including sub-movements such as death metal, speed metal, grindcore, and hair metal. Essential and highly entertaining reading for high school and undergraduate courses in popular music studies, communications, media studies, and cultural studies, the Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal Music and Culture offers a guide to the ultimate underground music, exploring its rich cultural diversity, resilience, and adaptability. Entries for musicians include a discography for those wanting to start or develop their music collections.

The musical adventure of a lifetime. The most exciting book on music in years. A book of treasure, a book of discovery, a book to open your ears to new worlds of pleasure. Doing for music what Patricia Schultz—author of the phenomenal 1,000 Places to See Before You Die—does for travel, Tom Moon recommends 1,000 recordings guaranteed to give listeners the joy, the mystery, the revelation, the sheer fun of great music. This is a book both broad and deep, drawing from the diverse worlds of classical, jazz, rock, pop, blues, country, folk, musicals, hip-hop, world, opera, soundtracks, and more. It's arranged alphabetically by artist to create the kind of unexpected juxtapositions that break down genre bias and broaden listeners’ horizons— it makes every listener a seeker, actively pursuing new artists and new sounds, and reconfirming the greatness of the classics. Flanking J. S. Bach and his six entries, for example, are the little-known R&B singer Baby Huey and the '80s Rastafarian hard-core punk band Bad Brains. Farther down the list: The Band, Samuel Barber, Cecelia Bartoli, Count Basie, and Afropop star Waldemer Bastos. Each entry is passionately written, with expert listening notes, fascinating anecdotes, and the occasional perfect quote—"Your collection could be filled with nothing but music from Ray Charles," said Tom Waits, "and you'd have a completely balanced diet." Every entry identifies key tracks, additional works by the artist, and where to go next. And in the back, indexes and playlists for different moods and occasions.
