In Água Viva Clarice Lispector aims to 'capture the present'. Her direct, confessional and unfiltered meditations on everything from life and time to perfume and sleep are strange and hypnotic in their emotional power and have been a huge influence on many artists and writers, including one Brazilian musician who read it one hundred and eleven times. Despite its apparent spontaneity, this is a masterly work of art, which rearranges language and plays in the gaps between reality and fiction.

Roni Horn's remarkable body of work continues to communicate how she imaginatively inhabits the world and combines a careful study of the role of language in perception. Horn's unique ability to engage the viewer with a vivid sense of time and place in her range of sculptures, books, drawings and photographic installations, provide an active pursuit of self-revelation and the transience of form. For Horn's exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London in 2004, the entire floorplan of the main gallery was given over to the installation of Rings of Lispector. Consisting of interconnecting rubber tiles, the work is inlaid with select passages from Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector's book Agua VivaStream of Life). Translated by Hélène Cixous, phrases appear on the floor in circular arrangements, echoing the movement of raindrops on the surface of water. The work embodies a sense of the dialectic between architectural space and poetic force, encouraging one to experience the rubber physically underfoot and to view the words from above. This act of location addresses inner emotions with the idea of landscape.

This book investigates the religious and social background of members of neo-pentecostal mega-churches in Lima, Peru. From a sociological perspective, it examines the social factors of religious mobility of neo-pentecostals to and between these churches. The book's findings address the question of whether religious mobility of neo-pentecostals serves as a springboard for upward social mobility. The first book by Helene Cixous on painting and the contemporary arts. This collection gathers most of Helene Cixous' texts devoted to contemporary artists, such as the painter Nancy Spero, the photographer Andres Serrano, the visual artist Roni Horn, the fashion designer Sonia Rykiel and the choreographer Karine Saporta, among others. The artworks belong to different genres and media - photography, painting, installations, film, choreography and fashion design - while the commentaries all deal with some of Helene Cixous' privileged themes: exile, war, violence (against women) and exclusion, as well as love, memory, beauty and tenderness.Neither art criticism nor a collection of critical essays, Helene Cixous responds to these artworks as a poet, reading them as if they were poems. Written between 1985 and 2010, most of these essays are unpublished in English, or published only in rare catalogues or art books.

Autotheory--the commingling of theory and philosophy with autobiography--as a mode of critical artistic practice indebted to feminist writing and activism. In the 2010s, the term "autotheory" began to trend in literary spheres, where it was used to describe books in which memoir and autobiography fused with theory and philosophy. In this book, Lauren Fournier extends the meaning of the term, applying it to other disciplines and practices. Fournier provides a long-awaited account of autotheory, situating it as a mode of contemporary, post-1960s artistic practice that is indebted to feminist writing, art, and activism. Investigating a series of works by writers and artists including Chris Kraus and Adrian Piper, she considers the politics, aesthetics, and ethics of autotheory.

How we view the foreign, presented either in the interrelated forms of culture, language, or text, determines to a large degree the way in which we translate. This volume of essays examines the cultural politics of translation that have determined the production and dissemination of the foreign in domestic cultures as varied as contemporary North America, Europe, and Israel. The essays address from a variety of theoretical perspectives the question posed almost two hundred years ago by the German philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher of whether the translator should foreignize the domestic or domesticate the foreign.

In this first book-length study to compare the "new novels" of both Spanish America and Brazil, the authors deftly examine the differing perceptions of ambiguity as they apply to questions of gender and the participation of females and males in the establishment of Latin American narrative models. Their daring thesis: the Brazilian new novel developed a more radical form than its better-known Spanish-speaking cousin because it had a significantly different approach to the crucial issues of ambiguity and gender and because so many of its major practitioners were women. As a wise strategy for assessing the canonical new novels from Latin America, the coupling of ambiguity and gender enables Payne and Fitz to discuss how borders--literary, generic, and cultural--are maintained, challenged, or crossed. Their conclusions illuminate the contributions of the new novel in terms of experimental structures and narrative techniques as well as the significant roles of voice, theme, and language. Using Jungian theory and a poststructural optic, the authors also demonstrate how the Latin American new novel faces such universal subjects as myth, time, truth, and reality. Perhaps the most original aspect of their study lies in its analysis of Brazil's strong female tradition. Here, issues such as alternative visions, contrasexuality, self-consciousness, and ontological speculation gain new meaning for the future of the novel in Latin America. With its comparative approach and its many bilingual quotations, Ambiguity and Gender in the New Novel of Brazil and Spanish America offers an engaging picture of the marked differences between the literary traditions of Portuguese-speaking and Spanish-speaking America and, thus, new insights into the distinctive mindsets of these linguistic cultures.

The realities and rewards of leadership come to life in this illuminating and insightful look at the ancient biblical image of shepherds. Experience a fully illustrated personal encounter with Bedouin shepherds whose life and work prompt us to think biblically about serving Christ. Here is your trail to become a shepherd leader: a compassionate provider, courageous protector and competent guide. Take this forty day journey and experience a life changing encounter with the Divine Shepherd. Become a shepherd after God's own heart by rediscovering true biblical leadership. An authentic classic endorsed by Billy Graham and a host of church and ministry leaders from across the globe. *Dear Dr. Laniak, Our family knows from first-hand experience your heartbeat for the Gospel and your love of the students in your charge. You are an authentic Shepherd Leader, and I am encouraged to know that you are training others to be the same. (Dr. Billy Graham) *Of the leadership models in Christ's ministry, only the servant model has received any in-depth treatment. Laniak's book helps remedy this lack, providing a detailed treatment of the Shepherd Model - something that is desperately needed by today's Christian leaders. (Dr. Bobby Clinton, J. Robert Clinton Leadership Development Institute and Clinton Network) *When much of what passes for Christian leadership is made up of secular models, with some biblical texts thrown in, this book models for us godly leadership as shown in Jesus - the Chief Shepherd! (Dr. Leighton Ford, Leighton Ford Ministries) *Books on leadership are everywhere but this one is different: Tim Laniak gives perspectives on 'shepherd leadership' drawn from biblical insights, first hand cross-cultural living amongst shepherds in Bible lands, and contemporary applications. (Kirk Franklin, Executive Director, Wycliffe International, Melbourne, Australia) *A warm, winsome, and captivating forty-day journey to Godly leadership. (Anne Graham Lotz, Founder and President, AnGeL Ministries) *With a shepherd's heart and a scholar's mind, Laniak goes beyond Phillip Keller's devotional classic, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, and raises our job description to a divine standard. (Dr. Haddon W. Robinson, President, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) *Through real-life stories of shepherds, Christian leaders are called to be not only tender and loving, but also tough and disciplined. (Dr. John M. Perkins, President, The John M. Perkins Foundation) *Exceptional leadership insights, welcome guidance, and rare encouragement! (Dr. Mark W. McCloskey, Lead Faculty, Transformational Leadership, Bethel Seminary) *Reading Laniak's fascinating anthropological observations and rich scriptural insights will make spiritual shepherds anywhere in the world better leaders and better followers. (Dr. Samuel J. Voorhies, Former Director, International Leadership Development, World Vision International) *A refreshing devotional that draws the long time Christian leader back to first base... and equally equips the new pastor, elder or deacon who desires to remain faithful over the long haul. (Dr. David Yap, Pastor, Chairman, SIM East Asia) * Because Laniak's reflection is so deeply grounded in Scripture and its cultural context, I will recommend this work enthusiastically to God's undershepherds everywhere, who will find its orientation immediately relevant. (Dr. David Baer, President, Overseas Council) *Laniak's refreshing insights provide a roadmap for further reflection long after the 40 days of readings have been completed. (Dr. John Pellowe, CEO, Canadian Council of Christian Charities) *A spiritual quest that could have been written specifically for military chaplains...(Captain Jessie R. Tate, Former Fleet Chaplain, Commander US Fleet Forces Command) * A most needed and timely book that warms the heart and lifts the spirit. (Dr. Danny Goh, Associate Dean & Chair, Pastoral Theology, Singapore Bible College)
